Hey fellas,

Fooling around with my "new" camera and I don't know if it is broken or if I don't know how to use it. I tested the mirror lock, took a shot and unlocked my mirror. Know my camera won't advance. Should I send it in to get fixed? Fix it myself?

My OM-1 jammed early this year. Selftimer lets me advance and shoot a single frame, but it requires some shaking of the body. Mine has no resistance whatsoever in the shutter release and does not let any advance. Doing the selftimer trick "resets" the shutter button as normal and lets advance a single frame. Common issue?

I once owned an OM-1MD, and in 1981 the film advance jammed on me, too, during my first visit to the UK. In my case, there was film loaded. I do not recall, but I presume that I extracted the film before sending it in Olympus repair. Fortunately for me, the USD-Pound exchange at the time had gone incredibly favorable and I was able to find a new OM-1n body for only $110 (after duty refund), which I still have today.

A small piece in the double lock mechanism has broken. That is what it seems to be the case. It happens when the camera locks and someone attempts to fire the camera.

To the OP:
On the bottom of the body there is a series of 3 cogs, one of them is out of its bearing. That;s what happens when you can advence the film, but shutter doesn't cock. When the cog goes back in the wrong sequence, like 180 degrees out, the camera jams.
I've seen this more often on a -4TI, but it can happen to any OM with the MD system.

Send it to be repaired by an OM specialist.

Score! Thanks for that! I just turned the cog and it unfroze. Going to send it to get CLA's but not after I shoot some film.
