old tri-x, long rolls, info wanted

hi

i know i saw it here, but i can't seem to find the thread here,
and it linked to RFF ... so forgive me.

a while ago ( less than a year ? ) someone was asking about
tri x bulk rolls and was told that while it wasn't the current tri x
it is sold still. it is sold as a long roll, movie film stock?
not called tri x but has a 4 digit number instead, but it IS tri x,
and very much like tri-x was 30+ years ago ...

i am interested in buying some ( or at least reading about it again .. )
and was wondering if anyone can link me to the thread,
or has any inkling of what i am talking about so they can
post the current name of this film.

Double-X is probably what you are thinking of. The number (for 35mm) is 5222. Trick is to find someplace that has short ends of it, leftover from a movie. Not many movies are shot in 35mm B&W, so they don't often have stock. I suppose Eastman would sell one roll, but that's 400 feet at something like $150. It's not any cheaper than Tri-X if you buy it from Eastman.

No it is not Tri-X. It is slower. But it's fine film from all accounts.

Kodak also make Plus-X (5231) in 400 and 1000 ft. rolls, though it is not the same film as consumer Plus-X.

Eastman Double-X is definitely not Tri-X. No way, no how does it even look like it. I got some about a year or two ago and used it. It's ok, but it is cine film and is really designed to be printed onto release stock. Tri-X for still cameras (400TX) is far better in terms of tonality and grain. Get it cheap from Freestyle with the Arista Premium 400 label.
