Canon AL-1
Your memory is better than mine. The Olympus OMF I owned was a very nice camera, but the focus assist would drink battery juice like a camel that had been lost in the desert for a month. Make that two months. It took four A76 batteries a shot.

Probably the AL-1 has the same power (energy consumption) requirement, but the AL-1 uses two AAA batteries, so it should definitely last much longer than the Olympus. Olympus should have fitted AA or AAA batteries instead.

The Nikon N2020 uses four AAA, for example.

Curious fact, the OM-F has a form factor or silhouette that looks very similar to the Olympus FTL, the "forgotten" Olympus SLR...

I really like the OMF to shoot with, but the battery situation drove me nuts. Yes, I had the Olympus FTL and it was a darn nice camera. The Oly FTL was seldom talked about and many folks know nothing about it.
Great camera!

Thank you for all of the great responses. Since I am a fan of the Olympus OM series and own several lenses as well as an OM-1n and an OM-2s, I'm picking up an OM-F for fun and to see how it works, understanding that it is not a true auto-focus. After making an offer on one, I discovered that the OM-30 is actually the same camera as the F. I'm glad I got the F, though. It seems more obscure

Make sure you let us know what you think of it. Kind of a small review would be nice. There are a lot of younger folks out there that have no clue as to what some of these older 35mm cameras can do.

I received my OM-F and it is in great condition. I haven't run any film through it yet but everything appears to work as intended.
I have noticed, however, that the mirror 'clack' is unusually loud on this camera. I don't see any seals for the mirror.
Does anyone know if the OM-F (OM-30) comes with a mirror cushion that I should replace or is it just really loud?

Not much in the way of Autofocus until the plastic-fantastic 1980s

 all my box cameras are auto focus ! they were made way before the 1980s.
optiken: look at some of the argus cameras they might possess some of the traits you are looking for .
