Some years ago I saw an original print of Horsts's Mainbocher Corset. It also had heavy retouching (although less obvious than this example). If you look carefully at this print from Sotheby's you can see it:

I downloaded it, still hard to see. Sadly, low res is the standard for online stuff.

It would be interesting to make a study of figure retouching. I have a lot of cabinet cards but never thought about it until I saw this example. I will have to look for them.
