Old Microphen and Fenofort questions

So I got a hold of some ancient chemistry, Ilford Microphen negative developer and Fenofort positive developer (images attached). As for the Microphen I am wondering if it still works, I have heard that old powder chemistry dies hard, the bags still look good, the powder in them seems nice under fingers, I feel no clumps or anything. I know you all will tell me to test it to know for sure and I will do just that but still I need a little bit of help from someone who has done something I am about to do (I come from Serbia, film negatives are somewhat expensive for us so I am trying not to ruin my negative but still want to experiment). Do development times vary since it is old or not? Also, the name of the product is Microphen developer and replenisher but I think that I got only two bags that should be developer. What's the deal here?

As for the Fenofort I am less concerned since it will ruin a paper or two, the question I have about it is should I even bother? It doesn't look too good, the powder has changed a bit to brown colour but it too feels clumpless. And, since I don't speak Hungarian, I hope someone can translate this or at least give me some guidance for dissolving this Fenofort.

Hello Boris,

The Microphen should be fine. I recently found a 30+ years old (600cc) packet of Microphen in the junk drawer and used it to push develop a TMax 400 roll to ISO 3200 with quite satisfactory results (see (there was a url link here which no longer exists)).

I think the replenisher had to be bought separately; the two bags included are both used for mixing the developer. You should find mixing instructions in the package. Here they are, if you don't:

MAKING UP
Dissolve the contents of the smaller packet in about three-quarters of the total volume (see label) of hot water at about 50°C (125°F). When most of the chemicals have dissolved, add the contents of the large bag and stir until completely dissolved. Add cold water to make up to the total volume.
WORKING STRENGTH
Use undiluted

Good luck!

Hi again,

I thought I might as well translate the Fenofort instructions for you:

First dissolve the (contents of) the black bag in approx. 800 ml of max. 40° warm water, then dissolve (the contents of) the colourless bag.
When completely dissolved, add water to get one litre of developer solution.
Before use, this stock solution must be diluted with water in the proportion 1:3.
Developing time: At 20°C, 1.5 - 2 minutes.

Michael, thank you a lot for all the help, will try both developers to see what will I come up with! I love the results you have, I am also in love with the push process so I will try it also with this batch of Microphen.

I tried a color processing kit(made in 1991)developed a roll kodak T400CN film and chemistry powder so hard. you can see the effect is not bad.
The bw chemistry shelf life should be longer compared to color chemistry l think.
