Hi,

at the moment I have an EOS film camera with a new 50mm STM 1.8 that I bought on Amazon some month ago.

I decide to buy another lens, do you have some suggestion about a good wide angle for EF camera?

Or a good zoom EF lens with good quality?

I read a lot about old lens, but only for Pentax and m42, but not for EOS

Although I not an EOS shooter, I recall that the EOS 28 2.8 to be good wide, on the othe hand the 35 to 80 kit lens seem to have gotten a poor review.

Hrm . . . I've actually had photos published that I shot with a first generation 35-80 EF zoom. It was actually a pretty decent lens, plastic mount and all.

Speaking of first generation zooms, I also own a 70-210mm f/4. It was released in 1987. I bought my copy in 1990 and I bought it because it had a constant f/4 aperture. It was replaced by a variable aperture 70-210, which I didn't care for. This old 70-210 doesn't focus very fast, but for my purposes it focuses fast enough. But more importantly, I've always been very pleased with the image quality I've gotten from this lens. So, since you began the title of this thread with "Old EF Lens . . ." I thought I'd mention this one as a possibility for you.

I had the 28/2,8 years ago and it was quite nice. Could not complain. It was cheap and nicely paired with the 50/1,8 that I also had. If you´re interested in a great tele for little money, look at the 100/2. I also had the 70-210/4 zoom lens Michael wrote about and it was great as well although the zoom tends to get a bit sloppy with age.

My all time favorite lens combo on 35mm cameras are 24mm(25mm) 50mm and 105mm macro ( in your case 100mm). That combo have kept me a happy shooter for years taking care of most situations, I never was into longer teles although i do have a 180mm.

When I started on the EOS system just after the FD system was consigned to history, my second lens (after a 24-105mm slow zoom — entirely forgettable, along with the first generation 75-300mm f4.5 IS tele) was the EF 20mm f2.8. I still have it and use it a lot. I cannot remember how much I paid for it, but likely around AUD$220 in 1994 terms. This is the only non-L-series lens I have now, having progressively upgraded between 1995 and 1998. It is light, bright and fast and will give you an excellent introduction in planning your shots using a very wide perspective and very deep depth of field. Zooms are a good and sometimes useful compromise, but in the EF range, only the L-series lenses are fast in terms of aperture and response (and much more expensive). But good (if slow) EF wide-to-tele zoom lenses exist around f3.5 to f4. I would recommend most people angle for a fast (f2-2.8 lens) prime lens of say wide- to ultra-wide as their first EF lens introduction.
