Hello Team,

Was on eBay last evening and saw a few lenses for large format 4x5 already mounted on Sinar boards...

Questions

A) these lenses had aperature control but no shutter? What gives?
B) they looked like Schneider or Rodenstock elements but had Sinar as branding?
C) after paying several hundred dollars for I am sure some good glass, how do you expose the film properly, or is this referred to as a Barrel optic.....confusing?

Thanks for shedding any light on this, as I have access toAlpina and Sinar f, but only has old 127 Xenar on board and that shutter is slow and noisy...

All valid (not stupid) questions.
Sinar is a modular camera system. One of the modules is a shutter. I think it was called the Sinar DB shutter or some such.

EDIT: of course the more typical lens mounted in Copal shutter works just fine too. In this case you do not need the Sinar shutter.

Besides using lenses in DB boards you can also use old brass lenses in barrels with the Sinar shutter. The Sinar shutter is really a slick thing to have but only works with Sinar cameras unless you do modifications to your camera to accept it.

I looked at the linked brochure, am I understanding it correctly that the DB lenses don't have an aperture?

I am looking to adapt a more modern lens to my 4x5 Graflex RB, so I really need a barrel lens with an aperture, but the Graflex is a focal plane shutter, so I don't need a leaf shutter on the lens. The Sinar lenses looked like a possibility, but not if they don't have a manual aperture control.

Based on the pdf linked before, most of DB lenses have aperture control.

I personally am building a large format camera from scratch and need to figure out how to "manually" control the sinar board aperture. I have the correct angles for certain aperture mapped out, but I need a control for the lever which is behind the lens board. Lens board is complete so mounting the lens is not a problem.

Here is a 3D model of my board, the holes are for the board clamps which locks the sinar board in place.
