I'm kind of surprised they didn't mount them in a housing box to keep the elements off while waiting for launch.

Having been involved in a project where we once accidentally nose dived a small unmanned plane into the ground (Reminder to programmers on coordinate spaces: -100m altitude from current position is vastly different from -100m altitude...), I've been highly impressed by the survive-ability of modern solid state storage.
