Off Camera Flash Option Canon T70

Hello everyone. It's been a while since I've been around. Recently a gentleman I work with gave me a well taken care of Canon T70 with 35-70 mm, 135 mm telephoto lens along with a Canon 299T flash. To date this is the newest camera I now own. My issue is I want to get the flash off-camera when I use it. It's very heavy and I would feel much better putting it on a flash bar. Can I use a EOS type flash cord to connect to the 299T on a flash bar? I know they have 5 pins but the middle and back 2 pins look like they would line up with the 3 pin set up on the T70 hot shoe. I can't find any flash cords that have a 3 pin connector. I have done quite a bit of research and haven't found a definitive answer. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The second reply in this thread says you can use the five pin cord with the three pin flash, no problem.

It depends on what you mean by "full auto", if you mean TTL flash the correct flash with the off camera camera cord 2 is the Canon 300TL that will will give you full TTL /FEL flash, however if you already have a Canon 199A flash you could use it with a hot shoe to cable adaptor in the computer or manual mode off the camera providing you have the Canon sync lead for the 199A and a flash extension lead.

Holding a camera in my right hand and flash in the left means automated film advance is a must, so I'd prefer to use the T90, but I have a winder for the A-series cameras if that's the way to go. I don't own a Cannon 199a but I have an off camera flash cord 2, an A1 and a T90 if you give me a couple of hours I'll try the cord with my Vivitar 285 on both cameras.

Thanks, I'll run a test film through to check exposure on the A-1 and T90. I also have a Vivitar 285, but it's Nikon fitting!

I don't understand, the Vivitar 285 isn't a dedicated flash you should be able to use it with any camera.

Are you sure? Mine has NA for Nikon version on the base and I always used it with AF Nikons on auto back in the 90s.

It's only got the central contact on the shoe, so no ttl/

That sounds more like my Vivitar 4600 flash than it does a Vivitar 285.

I suggest you buy a Canon 300TL flash for your T90 from Ffords they have one at the moment that's brand new old stock for £39, I.M.O. it's the best solution and use it with the correct Canon of camera cable 2.which will give you full off camera TTL flash metering with your T90.

Thanks for the heads up. I tested the T90 with cable 2 and the Canon 199A flash last week and hope to process the film later today. If that doesn't work out I may go to my A-1 with power winder and 199A via the cable 2. If there's no joy I shall follow your advice and get a 300TL. I'm fairly sure the off camera cable 2 follows previous flash protocols, but will confirm.

Because I'm working close up, manual flash read outs are for F22 and I'm slightly concerned TTL auto may not be accurate at minimum focus distances. Whatever, I'll work through the options systematically.

The TTL flash for close ups is perfect because it measures the flash that actually hits the film with a sensor under the reflex mirror, which is much better than computer flash for close up and macro work.
