Anybody know if the 199A flash will give full auto on a T90 via an off camera shoe cord 2?
It depends on what you mean by "full auto", if you mean TTL flash the correct flash with the off camera camera cord 2 is the Canon 300TL that will will give you full TTL /FEL flash, however if you already have a Canon 199A flash you could use it with a hot shoe to cable adaptor in the computer or manual mode off the camera providing you have the Canon sync lead for the 199A and a flash extension lead.
I don't own a Cannon 199a but I have an off camera flash cord 2, an A1 and a T90 if you give me a couple of hours I'll try the cord with my Vivitar 285 on both cameras. Not sure I'm following you benjiboy, and the error is on my part. I have various A-series, T-series and EOS Canon bodies, a 199A flash and the Canon off camera shoe cord 2 (a long coiled lead that connects the hot shoe and flash gun). I'm trying to work out which, if any, will work off camera flash in the most automated way. I think I'm right in saying an A-1 (or AV-1, AT-1, etc) gives auto flash settings with the 199A, at least it does on the camera hot shoe.
I'm uncertain what generation of Canon cameras the shoe cord 2 was intended for, or even of it matters. Holding a camera in my right hand and flash in the left means automated film advance is a must, so I'd prefer to use the T90, but I have a winder for the A-series cameras if that's the way to go. I also have an EOS film camera if that works with the 199A.
Thanks, I'll run a test film through to check exposure on the A-1 and T90. I also have a Vivitar 285, but it's Nikon fitting!I tried the off camera cord 2 with the Vivitar 285 with my A1 and T90 and it fired the flash in both cases so it should do the same with the Canon 199A.
I don't understand, the Vivitar 285 isn't a dedicated flash you should be able to use it with any camera. Thanks, I'll run a test film through to check exposure on the A-1 and T90. I also have a Vivitar 285, but it's Nikon fitting!
Are you sure? Mine has NA for Nikon version on the base and I always used it with AF Nikons on auto back in the 90s.I don't understand, the Vivitar 285 isn't a dedicated flash you should be able to use it with any camera.

I'm positive https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=...=img.12...3596.13198.0.16261.12.6.0.6.0.0.181 If it's a dedicated flash it's not a Vivitar 285.Are you sure? Mine has NA for Nikon version on the base and I always used it with AF Nikons on auto back in the 90s.
I suggest you buy a Canon 300TL flash for your T90 from Ffords they have one at the moment that's brand new old stock for £39, I.M.O. it's the best solution and use it with the correct Canon of camera cable 2.which will give you full off camera TTL flash metering with your T90.As you were, mine's a Vivitar Series 1 600N.

The TTL flash for close ups is perfect because it measures the flash that actually hits the film with a sensor under the reflex mirror, which is much better than computer flash for close up and macro work. Thanks for the heads up. I tested the T90 with cable 2 and the Canon 199A flash last week and hope to process the film later today. If that doesn't work out I may go to my A-1 with power winder and 199A via the cable 2. If there's no joy I shall follow your advice and get a 300TL. I'm fairly sure the off camera cable 2 follows previous flash protocols, but will confirm.
Because I'm working close up, manual flash read outs are for F22 and I'm slightly concerned TTL auto may not be accurate at minimum focus distances. Whatever, I'll work through the options systematically.
