I've scanned hundreds of negs and pos film with this.

Now, when I launch the scanner only Photograph /line art/newspaper etc appears as a choice. NO MORE FILM choice. Nothing has changed in my system. I have the exact problem with using SilverFast s/w.

I've done everything from:

Reinstalling the software
Deleting the epson prefs.
repairing permissions
Has anyone seen such a thing or can you receommend a course of action?
Thank you for your time.

I have only seen somethng similar when the scanner isn't being recognised so the software goes to default settings.

Are you using the Epson software?
Have you tried VueScan (might be worth trying the free demo version)?
Could be worth trying a different USB port and cable?
Have you actually tried making a scan to see if it still works OK?

Tried

The s/w sees the scanner and will in fact scan as a document. It seems as if it is not reconizing the neg holder. I've tried using the epson s/w as this is always my first goto s/w for scanning negs.

The USB cable is passing data or it would not be scanning as a "document"

Thank you for your help.

I had an unrelated problem with my Epson 4990, ended up calling Epson's tech support. The tech was very patient and helpful, but try as he and I might, we were unable to resolve the problem.

Nonetheless, my point is that the Epson tech tried everything he knew to do. I recommend you call Epson's tech support folks. They will do their best to solve your problem.

Oh, and apparently my problem lies either in the OS (Windows XP) or my USB hardware. The scanner works perfectly on another computer. Which reminds me, if you have another machine available, try the scanner on it, see what happens. If it works normally on the new machine, then it isn't the scanner.

Did you actually FULLY unplug and then replug the connection that runs from the lid of the scanner to the base of the scanner? That often solves this problem. You may need to then turn the scanner off and on and then reboot your software to get things sync'd up again.

I also had a strange problem with my V500 that turned out to be simple. When I loaded the negative if the film extended above the top of the holder the scanner would not recognize that the film was there. Tech support tried to help but no good...then I thought I wonder if the film protruding out the top could possibly be the problem??? It was the problem. The film can extend below to bottom of the holder and no problem but if it extends beyond the top I received an error message. Could that be your problem?

there is a 'notch' at one end of the film holder, that allows the light to be sampled. My holder has a white line around it. That end MUST go to the hinge end of the glass
