Recently, on one of my photos, someone commented, "Good in B&W"
I've not a clue what this means.

What's the strangest comment someone has made about one of your photos?

'You did too much "Photoshop" on the image.' It was a darkroom print from film.

"These are great photos. You must have a really good camera."

Sorta like saying 'That was a delicious meal. You must have a great stove'.

Something along the lines of "Your photos look so old-timey" just because they're black & white. And then the "Can your camera take colour pictures?"

A comment that I made about someone else's photo:
"Are those your toes?"
(it was a wide angle photo shooting from the top and down the centre of a circular staircase).

When out with the 4x5 - "Can you still get film for that?" Response - "Why would I be shooting with it if I couldn't?"

From a MA camera club judge (yeah, I know) - "Well, it's definitely a sky replacement. You don't get real skies like this here." Got a very low score. The sky was unaltered. All I did was clone out one tree in a distracting spot. I shot it when we lived in Iowa.

That is an example of an occasion where the choice of title - "Iowa Sunset" - is important!

I remember a camera club judge evaluating an excellent sports photograph submitted by a friend. It was a shot of a receiver leaping with (CFL) football in outstretched hands in an attempt to break the plane of the goal line immediately above and slightly to the correct side of the large orange foam vertical marker of the corner formed by the sideline and the goal line. The player's face was sharp as a tack, and everything else was progressively out of focus, including the incredibly important orange marker..
The comment made by the judge: "try to exclude that distracting orange element from the photograph".
Clearly not a football fan!

Yeah, the orange blur is kinda important to the shot.

My title was Iowa Sunrise, though I don't know if the judges see the titles when they put in their scores.

You haven't experienced the "odd comments" until you've sat through a 3-hour critique of work that includes your classmates cat snapshots that are supposed to say something.

"Are those your children?" to my white haired ex-mother-in-law with my children who were toddlers at the time. So she said, "Yes and at my age it is a miracle!" The people walked away stunned.

My Rolleiflex gets some odd remarks. "Why does it have two lenses?" I was once asked. "The top one is video and the bottom one is for photos," was my answer, not original but I wasn't fast-thinking that day. Questioner smiled and walked on.

I was out with my Contax G1 and a K2 (yellow) filter. A stunningly attractive belle on the street came by and said "I like your yellow lens". She had a Fuji digital and I certainly liked it and everything I saw about her.

Rolleiflexes and to an extent rangefinders are chick magnets. Oh, to be 50 again (on good days I would even settle to be 60) and not 70 and beyond...

Few, but highly laudatory I am sure.

Mostly, "Gee, that's swell," comments. Although I get a lot of "why isn't he/she smiling" comments on photos I post of my kids on Facebook. Most of my photos only see the inside of a box.

The high schools around me taught photography using film and darkroom. But over the past few years, every one of them has junked their darkroom. They now teach "Imaging". I'm not sure what that is...

That question is not too dumb. Some photographers use 127 or 620 cameras with expired film that they stored for years. I think it was legitimate to ask about sheet film.

If you really want to experience photography stupid, it is not from comments from people out in the field. Go to the infamous D review site.

I've not a clue what this means. What's the strangest comment someone has made about one of your photos?
If I said it as a positive statement, it would mean great composition that does not need color to carry it.
If I said it as a criticism, I would mean decent composition, but the use of color does not support, or it fights against, the image.

Strange comments...can't think of any off-hand. I sort of expect them, so I guess I don't make note of them.
