What give a blacker sky? Number 15 or 39 orange filter?

To answer this question it would be helpful to know what type of film you are using. colour slide, colour neg, black & white, infra-red, ortho?

Try a yellow even the very light yellow make a difference to blue sky and cloud.

#25 red, but don't overdo it. if #15 doesn't give you what you want try a grad neutral in additionto the #15 or a polarizer.also dodge and burnis propably a must if skillfully done.if none of this works wait for the right weather and light conditions.not every picture needs white puffy clouds and a black sky.that would be rather boring.

If you have a polarizing filter, try combining your 39 with the polarizing filter. This will give you darker sky than the 39 by itself.

Kodak 15 blocks below about 525; that is it allows yellow-green, yellow and red to pass.
Kodak 39 blocks between 500 and 675 about, allowing the lower and higher wavelengths to pass; that is it allows only blue and red to pass.
I am not sure Wratten 39 is what you want. Are you sure the 39 isn't a product code number.
If you used them together you would only get red.

Filters have varying effects based on the available light and the scene at hand. You have two strong filters. Both will darken blue skies. They also may lighten sunset colors. You'll need to try both under different conditions to see what they do. In general, the yellow 15 will darken blue skies quite a bit, especially if the skies are very clear and blue. It will have less of an effect on hazy skies. How much more or less of an effect? It varies. Take notes. In general, the red filter is really strong and will create a harsh, moonlight effect under some conditions. Less so in others. It varies. Take notes.

I must be missing something. I think the Wratten 39 will lighten blue skies. Am I wrong?

well,according to Kodak's specs it has quite a bit blue transmission,which would darken negs and lighten prints in the sky.you miht be right.I would not recommnend stronger filtration than orange #15:,which the OP seems to have.whistling:

How ridiculous! The sky isn't just one shade of blue, nor is sky the only variable in a scene, nor do we necessarily want to every print to come
out generically the same in this respect. Just go out and experimentally shoot then print with the damn things till you get a feel for your own style with them. This is like getting in an argument over ice cream flavors at Baskin Robbins. You gotta taste the stuff for yourself!

What give a blacker sky?
So which gives a blacker sky, a #15 (which is an orange) or a # 39 (which is a blue(contrast control for printing motion picture duplicates))?
