I have bought an Eos 1n RS the EOS-1N RS has a fixed, semi-transparent mirror for up to 10 fps). I have heard that there other special edition of the Eos 1n series, but i am not sure what type of cameras that is.

The 1N RS is a great camera...and super cheap these days! I found one on Ebay for $200 and it worked great.
You do lose 2/3 of a stop with the pelical mirror. I shot downhill skiing with the Canon F1 HS (high speed) back
in the 90's (it was 15 frames per sec) and when the RS came along, it was a semi-decent substitute. Not familiar
with any other "special" EOS 1n bodies though. Basically, it went EOS 1 to the 1N and the EOS 1N RS was sold
parallel with the 1N. The cost of the RS was huge, and a lot of guys back then thought it to be overpriced for
the added frame rate. Really, the RS couldn't follow focus well at 10fps, it was a good "trap zone" camera that
could give you more editable frames from a roll, such as when you pre-focused on a downhill ski gate, and then
did a burst as the skier went through the gate...(you still only got about 2 frames tack sharp with a 400 F2.8 or
a 600 F4.) I shot pro-cycling in Europe, and it was a good camera for fill flash work, you always saw the exposure
happening...you just needed to remember (shooting slide film) that you had to adjust for the 2/3 stop mirror. Also was a good remote rail camera for horse racing.

The RS is a very neat camera. When I got it, I found it large and clunky--same as the standard 1N, but it just didn't fit my hands like my old New F-1, and I didn't care for all those little buttons on the side as opposed to more transparent controls like on an older-style camera. Still it was worth getting used to for the instantaneous reaction to pressing the shutter button. Without the mirror motion, it feels like the film is just getting sucked up by a vacuum on the takeup spool. I rarely use it in 10 fps mode, but the low shutter lag is noticeable and useful in single-frame mode as well.

The viewfinder is a bit dimmer than a camera with a normal mirror, but one can get used to it. It's still easier than focusing a LF camera in the corners of the frame with a wide lens, and I can manage that.

If the mirror does a 50/50 split, then that is 1 stop reduction each way.

It would be logical though to allow more light to reach the film, so if the film exposure is only 2/3 of a stop down, the viewfinder must be more than a stop. Probably less notable in reality than in discussion!

Zombie thread coming back to life.

Canon is famous for the pelical mirror going way back many decades to certain earlier models/product lines. Have any other camera makers offered models with a pelical mirror?
