imagine yourself a time traveler.
you are able to go anywhere and you want with your camera.
you never have to put film in it, the camera runs endlessly,
and when you return home all the film is processed and proof prints are already made.

what camera would you bring with you?
is it the camera you feel most comfortable with or is it something else?
why did you bring the camera and what was it you photographed, and where did you go?

(if it is a culture that thought bad things of photographers
steals your soul, devil tool, or pre 1839 &c you are covered the people will play nice.
that is, unless you don't want them to ... )

I want a big box camera like my foamcore sliding box camera, but that will make big beautiful negatives ( film and paper ) for contact printing... I think I want it to make 10-2/3 x 18 inch and 12x20 inch negatives.... super smooth movements and focus.... bright ground glass with air conditioned dark cloth.

It's going to be harder to figure out where to go, but maybe somewhere now in ruins in its heyday, like ancient egypt Alexandria with the lighthouse and pyramids or maybe ancient Rome or Greece. 18th century London would be interesting... OK since we get to choose any time we want and the "natives" will be nice, forget that... I want dinosaurs. T-rex will pose for me with his most ferocious grin...

Actually, some people once saw me shooting my wooden field camera, and asked if I had time traveled from the past. I said, "Yes. To save the world from digital". So, I guess we're all time travelers of a sort.

If I were a time traveler, I expect that I'd want to travel very light. So, I'd probably choose a small 35mm rangefinder of one sort or another.

I would time travel in my Tardis, with a built-in darkroom, and take all my cameras.

I would travel to Athens at it's peak. I have read that what we now see as grey stone statues were actually brightly colored when new.

My F5,Nikkor 50-135 f3.5 Ai-S loaded with Delta 400. Pre settled North America to photograph those wonderful forests that used to cover it and the critters that inahbited it. I would truly love to see Appalachia before we destroyed it. Oh and I hope that includes unexhaustable batteries.

Assuming that the (im)practicalities were taken care of, when would I like to photograph, and how?

The Moon landings. Probably with a TLR or scale-focus direct vision camera.

The breakthrough of the Mediterranean into what is now the Black Sea (might need a helicopter for that one) using large format and something portable for the air. that would literally be a big project, probably for the Pre-national Geographic papyrus edition...

American Bison about 200+ years ago. Probably something medium format.

There you have it. Human achievement, planetary evolution, and a near miss!
