Not strictly on topic, but maybe someone here knows

confectioners sugar you probably know by the name powdered sugar And it's sold in grocery and super markets next to regular sugar and baking supplies

It contains corn starch. I think that's to keep the powder a powder in the presence of any humidity. I was surprised the first time I tasted a bit, to find the slight bitter taste in it.
 
Fortinos used to stock borax in the laundry section. I'd assume Loblaws and the other related shops would also.

On the yeast bit. During prohibition many of the US brewers kept themselves alive by making and selling yeast. AB was the largest maker of bakers yeast into the 1980s I think.
