I was thinking about Peter Spangenberg's offer to bring lenses to sell from our favorite printer's salvage shop. If others of you would like to bring items to swap or sell, please do so. You can easily put them out for display at our 5 PM gatherings. Please do so at your own risk. The Powers family, dogs, Dolly and John, assume no responsibilty for loss or misrepresentation.

I need to ask...
Is there a fee/donation/etc for this gathering? What about food? I am planning on coming I just haven't figured out the details. I may have a 16x20 Saunder's Easel (not *precisely* square) that I just got for $300 and would love to trade My Jeep doesn't have enough room to haul all the stuff I'd like to trade.

Also, how many cameras / formats are people bringing? I need to invest in an Adams pack mule! I am really looking forward to this in spite of everything!
 
Might I suggest a print swap? Everyone interested brings a print/plate for the pool and numbers are assigned to each. Then the numbers go into a hat and each participant draws. Saturday or Sunday would probably be the best days for this to allow most people to get there.

Glad to hear you are still coming.

There is no fee other than I asked campers to split the cost of the porta potty. Since the house has a pretty fickle septic system it might be better if all visitors used the porta potty. In that case I think we will ask all to contribute. The first price I got was $90 just for the two day weekend. I am continuing to shop. I haven’t figured out the best way to collect a contribution from all. Suggestions gratefully considered.

"What about food? " We had been planning to eat out. There are two charcoal grills. If people want to cook on site they are welcome. This does add to the clean up though. Help from all will be appreciated. We will have trash cans and bags out. Please be careful and secure any food. We have dogs, raccoons, possum and coyote actively about.

In some cases it hinges on what their employer says or family problems. What format they will bring becomes secondary at that point. My hope is that as many who can will come and enjoy themselves. If they take pictures, that is good also. It appears that we may have 20 people here at various times, not all at the same time. That is only a guess.

Before any formal organizing is done perhaps we could get a quick head count to determine if there might be any interest in such a blind print exchange. So, if anyone attending would care to participate in such a thing, PM me in the next few days.

I'd expect the collective subject matter to be quite varied and for participants to be willing to accept that there will be some variation in print quality, process, and size. Like someone might end up with a quarter-plate ruby ambrotype portrait, a 4x5 platinum still-life, 5x7 cyanotype nude, an 8x10 color C-print landscape, , 7x17 abstract fiber-based & gold-toned silverprint, 11x14 RC photogram, or a 20x24 hand-colored lith print of a duck, etc. Just leave it very open with the only restriction being it should not have any digital aspect in its creation.

I'd suggest but not insist the photographs be mounted and/or matted, and otherwise leave it pretty free-form.

We could put all the participant names in a hat and have someone draw the order in which the pieces would be selected, again by luck of the draw.

Is there a place we could display the photographs before doing the raffle on Saturday (afternoon?) if it comes to be?

Can't wait to head down there next week. Eva & I would love to do a print exchange, and will also bring a box full of crap ... er, treasures to swap or sell as well.

Looks like you are doing a good job of organizing. We have several portable tables. If it is not raining we can set up as many tables as are needed outside for the images. If weather is bad it will be a little crowed inside, but it can be done.

Saturday and Cleveland didn't seem to work out for most of the others coming. Hopefully it will be a good day to show your equipment, the print exchange, interesting cameras and local things. I do hope you and your dog will join us.

Bill Mitchell a multi large format shooter writes that he will try to join us Friday on our Cleveland tour. He hopes to bring his friend Jeff Scott who runs LABWORK the black & white Lab who advertises in B&W Magazine and works on 22nd Street in downtown Cleveland.

To assist people in getting around the area, I've put together a google map for the NEOH APUG get together. It's located at:

If you'd like to "collaborate" on the map, PM me your email address and I can add you to a list of those allowed to edit the map. Please be careful if you do that. If you have suggestions or corrections, please PM me with information that's as specific as possible, and I'll try to enter places as time allows.

Google maps has street map view, terrain view (shaded relief style), satellite view (overhead photo type), traffic view (colored to reflect traffic slowdowns), and street view (panable drive-by photos only in selected areas), so you can choose which suits your purposes. You can search for businesses by name, restaurants by type, street addresses, street intersections, etc. You can also get lat/long coordinates for the center of the map for your GPS from the URL created by the "Link" command in the upper right of the map on the blue band.

Great job on the map Lee!

Looks like I'm going to try to make it down on Friday afternoon. I still have one thing to clear-up, but I think it is a go. I'll be bringing along my trailer rig and hope to do a portrait set-up where I can steal a few of your souls. Assuming that Joe will be driving the Magic Bus as well, so I'm hoping folks don't mind a little ether fumes.

John, will there be somewhere I can park the trailer? I'm going to book myself into a local hotel, so It won't be there around the clock.

Welcome Bill! Glad to read that you are coming. We have had several inches of rain all of a sudden so I think we will park both your trailer and the Magic Bus on hard gravel by the house. That way they won’t sink into soft ground.

John Heartfield vs. Nazi Germany
August 30, 2008 - November 30, 2008

“Use photography as a weapon.” This was John Heartfield’s battle cry in his struggle to prevent the Nazis from gaining power in Germany in the 1930s. Unlike many socially conscious photographers of the era who produced documentary work, Heartfield created photomontages. They are composite images made by cutting and joining parts from several photographs (ones he took, commissioned or found), then re-photographed to form a single seamless image.

Heartfield’s photomontages were satirical commentaries that attacked fascism and the Nazi regime. They quickly gained an international audience when the artist was hired by AIZ (Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung or Workers’ Illustrated Paper), one of a plethora of illustrated tabloids in Germany in the late 1920s and 1930s. Heartfield regarded the printed magazine page, which was a photogravure, as his finished work of art.

This exhibition presents over 40 of Heartfield’s photogravures from AIZ along with issues of the magazine, which provide the original context for the artworks. All these objects come from the collection of the Akron Art Museum, which is one of only three art museums in the United States to possess substantial holdings of Heartfield’s art.

Although the Heartfields were acquired by the museum between 1979 and 1981, this is the first time all have been on view together. Most were too fragile to be handled, let alone displayed, due to the age and quality of the paper. Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services and additional funding from The Mary and Louis S. Myers Foundation, we were able to have all of the works treated in 2005-2006 at Cleveland’s Intermuseum Conservation Association.

The bite of Heartfield’s images remains sharp. While the countries, names and faces may have changed, many of the abuses of power lampooned in his images still occur around the world today.
