How about a non-stupid day?
(where would you hide all those people though?)

Photography is zen.
After all, the true photographer captures the moment in his heart, his eyes, his mind, his every being. That being recorded is almost secondary.
Especially film photographers that don't need to look at the lcd screen afterwards to verify the "correctness" of that moment.
 
I remember this in another earlier thread. Caused quite a debate - what else is new? I liked the idea of not mechanically/electronically/chemically documenting anything for one day. Pretty neat, but we're humans, there's no way we could have all done that. We're slaves to our tools/machines. Read the above posts....

I'd think a "non-driving day" might be somehow a little more relevant to the world these days.
 
Well for 30 years now, I have not had one, and I am to damn old to change..

Yeah - guess it was a bit late at night when I found that link. I figured it was some neo nazi bush regime 'ban all free speech' kind of thing. Guess not. The second website seems quite a lot of fun, though, if a bit intellectually insecure.
 
I think I have enough days in which I'm not shooting that I don't need to a special occasion to grant me permission or to justify my not shooting anything. Also, I'm not a slave to technology. Using it and being a slave to it are two different things. I make use of some technology, but I own it and I control it, it doesn't control me.
 
Not that my memory is very good these days, but seems to me, something about this was posted last year as well, and I don't know of anyone who wanted to do it a year ago either.

I can't start counting the number of overgeneralizations and sophisms in the second site. Deferral, re-deferral, and infinite deferral... Sounds like my interest in reading what he has to say about it.
 
Has anyone volunteered to record their non-photography day for posterity? If we could get them all to gather together in one spot for a pose, even a little Holga would probably be sufficient to capture the small group that would actually participate. ... Naw, why waste the time.
 
Well, this is just the point I was trying to make - it seemed like a neocon job or something...!
 
I was standing in front of the Venus of Milo at the Louvre about a month ago. I tried to take in the art, the beauty, the monent, but all around me people were using their digital cameras to document the moment. (Notice I did not say photograph the art work).

My moment with the art was ruined by the incessant flashes, so I took to observing people. Imagine my surprise as I witnessed someone taking a picture of someone taking a picture of the Venus of Milo. I saw people walk up to the art work and hold up the camera. They did not look at this piece with their own eyes, they looked at it throught the small LCD display on the back of the digital camera, then moved on.

So I am all for a day of no photographs --- in all art galleries everywhere.

I don't smoke anymore but I always bum a cigarette on the "Great American Smoke Out Day" and you can bet I inhale!
