These days, 1,000 photos of a wedding is not out-of-line. My daughter got married last month. The wedding photographer was a friend of the family, and we ended up with 1,424 photos (this was the wedding party getting ready, the ceremony itself, and the reception that followed).
IIRC back in the day, if you hired a professional photographer, he (or she) would've probably taken 240 or so (I'm guessing, based on 10 rolls of 220 film at 24 exposures each). They'd then edit them down, tossing the bad ones and show the best ones to the client for printing. These days the only thing that the photographer's not doing is the editing; they're leaving that up to the client, who will then decide what (if any) to print. Leaving the editing up to the client is a good thing, IMHO, as it allows them to decide what is a good photo and what isn't.
