fresh Shanghai GP3 is one of my favourites to use.

Shanghai film has to be the worst stuff I have ever used. I bought a ten pack on ebay, it was fresh according to the expiry date on the box. The very first roll had all the numbers and spots from the paper backing. Thinking it might just be that one roll, I tried another. Same results. The stuff is crap, I used the rolls for teaching people how to load film onto reels for development so they wouldn't screw up a good roll of film.

That's too bad. I've used ~30 rolls so far and haven't had any issue; some bought online via TaoBao, some bought in person in Hong Kong.

Can I ask your processing regime? There's some debates on how to best develop the film, and some suggest a prewash is the best way to avoid the number imprint from the backing.
