I have my Coolscan 4000 ED up and running with VueScan.

Very complicated, lots of learning to do. I'm currently scanning to JPEG because I'm not clear how to go about the other settings at this point. I'd like to scan to RAW and tweak files in lightroom. Any guidance from a Sherpa here on wending me through this maze?

First issue I'm having among others is when batch scanning I'm prompted to name each file. Is there an automated way of doing this on a windows machine? It would be a dream just to load 36 in start up walk away and have everything scanned and named.

Vuescan saving files. Notice the '+' in the file name. You can also use reserved placeholders like YYYY MM DD in file names. You really should read the manual.

The Output tab will also have everything you need to set the desired file format(s). Yes, formats, as you saveto jpg, tiff and raw all at the same time...

I'm reading the manual, watching tutorials, reading dusty forums and asking question. It seems there's a hangup or bug. You need to set the + on input and have the default and output folder as the same. Why? I dunno. But this seems to be doing the trick for now.

Next question.

Scanning RAW. It's a 48bit 4000DPI 120MB scan overkill for 35mm film? I'm asking opinions. That's a very large file. Will I lose all that much info by A. cutting back the DPI B. Cutting back the bit rate or C. Compressing the file on output? When I used to DSLR scan I was getting 25mb RAW files using an APS-C 18mp sensor. Am I getting that much more resolution using the scanner or is it stuff-fluff?

It was doing the trick now it's once again prompting me to name each file after every frame is scanned.

No, you don't need to set them the same. They will be the same*. Vuescan had had those fields now displayed in the both the Input and Output tab for a while. For convenience, I guess.

* At least that's how they behave on my Vuescan. If your experience is different there may be a bug. You could also reset all the settings and start over...

I mean, you have the files from DSLR and from scanner. When you compare them side-by-side, what do you see? When you compare jpgs and tiffs from scanner, what do you see? Theoretically, Nikon 4000 is close to real 4000dpi and has 14bit A/D conversion. Outputing to anything less might compromise the quality. But not everybody needs every last bit from the scanner every time.
