Nikon Speedlight SB-16 with the AS-8 base (For F3, etc.).
Soft carrying case, neat removable battery holder, clean condition.

I do not plan on getting an F3 any time soon..., so?

- Sell as equipped here?
- Trade for other flash unit with a standard base?
- Seek standard base to replace AS-8?

Extra option: use in PC cable connection mode, for special projects, odd old cameras, etc.?

I love the SB-16 and have a few of them. I use them with the Nikon F3HP as well as with all my other Nikons (FM3A, Z5, F2, etc...). I've even pressed one into service atop the Leica M6. In addition to a powerful, main strobe that can rotate and swivel (to do bounce flash), the SB-16 has the smaller front facing "mini-fill flash". This is an amazing feature in use. I kinda feel like the Nikon F3HP with a SB-16A is a secret weapon....just amazing how well these two work together.

Hmm, it looks like I could use the SB-16 with my N90s (a.k.a. F90x), with the addition of the small coupler AS-6.
Subject to confirmation from a Nikon expert.

Yes.

Attention: The Nikon Speedlight SB-16 consists of two parts: the main flash unit and the flash unit coupler having the mounting foot. Depending on which type is attached, the flash unit is identified as the Speedlight SB-16A or SB-16B. The SB-16A's Flash Unit Coupler AS-8 has a special mounting foot for the accessory shoe of Nikon F3 series camera, while the SB-16B's Flash Unit Coupler AS-9 features a standard ISO-type mounting foot. As shown in the table, the SB-16A and SB-16B can be mounted on any type of Nikon camera either directly or with the use of another Nikon Flash Unit Coupler. Usable shooting modes, however, are limited according to the combination of the flash unit and camera.

@BrianShaw thanks.

It may just be that, even with less than full features, the AS-6-adapted SB-16A is still a great, solid flash, especially with my limited flash experience?

Most definitely! Especially since you already have it. The non-TTL auto flash is quite good. You might want to consider the cost and convenience difference between an adapter and the alternative foot mentioned earlier.

Well, I bought the standard base from a forum member, shipping in progress.

Anybody interested in the (F3 style) AS-8 base?

I have 2 of the SB-16's, 2 AS-8 feet and 1 AS-9 foot. Today I took them out playing with it. I don't like it for 2 reasons.
1. GN at 35mm for ISO 100 is only 105. The actual is like 75. Not much power.
2. I can't turn off the fill flash because at certain distance it fills too strong and causes shadow.
