Well maybe if you were to actually look on ebay instead of the bottom of a tip you'd find a camera that isn't broken.

You don't like being called an idiot yet you tell people they have their head up their ass because they don't have the same problem as you. I mean, why would anyone go looking for a F100 in an ass, should I go check my neighbour's horses too? :confused:

You seem to be looking for insults where none were intended. I at least was not calling YOU an idiot. I was making a reference to similar humorous acronyms in the IT world. No personal insult intended. (For that matter I've used "ID10T Error!" to refer to my OWN mistakes plenty of times. But then I try not to be wound so tight.) In fact I pretty much said my joking "ID10T Error" was NOT the case, but "just a case of confirmation bias." You continue to support that conclusion. It doesn't make anyone an idiot; it makes them human.

Are you saying that no one every broke a latch on the back of another model of Nikon or other make of camera? I find that very hard to believe, even harder to believe you could verify it. YOU never broke the latch on another of your camers; that I can easily believe. But that doesn't mean that the F100 is flawed. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but "some people have broken the back latches" is not the same as "design flaw." Do they break at a higher rate than those of other Nikons or other cameras? Maybe, maybe not, but you haven't found confirmation of your pre-drawn conclusion here and that seems to upset you. When we get emotionally attached to the outcome of an investigation logic is the first casualty.

You say all the parts bodies you find are already missing the back and, when linked directly to multiple ones that aren't, you say you can't go to eBay sites. Well then, change your security system - or is it also pre-progammed only to allow sites that confirm your pre-existing bias? I can't imagine looking for used camera bodies for spare parts and NOT checking eBay. That's just setting yourself up to fail. eBay would be my prime source if I wanted a broken copy of a camera as a parts source.

About those Model T cars in FLOORADUH. I photographed a guy in Southern California who made whole Model T Fords out of aluminum so the Disney people could turn the thing upside down and every which way for the movie "FLubber." Betya you don't have that in the Sand Flea State. And as to the cars still working good -- are you sure they are made with genuine vintage Ford parts? For years, you could buy parts for a Model T or A in the Sears Catalog. I doubt if Ford made them.

Yes indeed, broken wrists and arms from starting it with the spark advanced, getting runover from starting it in gear, inadequate brakes on the rear wheels only, acetylene headlamps that could explode, and no radio!!

As for the camera, well that's what you get when you buy things with plastic parts. Caveat emptor.

I've had the broken latch problem a few times on my F100 and N70s. They were never dropped or particularly abused, just normal wear and tear. I've replaced doors when the doors were cheaper and replacement cameras were more expensive. Now it makes more sense to either 'fix' it with gaffers tape or replace the whole thing. But it seems ridiculous to have a pile of unused cameras that are perfectly functional except for the inability to keep the film door closed. I sympathize with you and agree that it's a bad design on an otherwise rugged and dependable camera.

The backs of my older Nikons are made of metal. Some newer models' backs are made of space age plastics.

I DID check ebay, but I got security warnings on the sites Richard mentioned. I meant "ass" because even though many of you never experienced the problem, you were totally unaware of it! Is all your browsing spent in APUGLAND?

Chip - I followed Richard's links to ebay and got no security warnings. I think your "security system" may be misconfigured. Check the links, they're for good F100s.
And...part of owning a film camera is learning to repair it yourself...because the pool of people willing to do it for you, as you have discovered, is shrinking rapidly.

Sorry to hear about your problems with F100 backs, but it appears you aren't open to the helpful advice that's being offered, and instead, are more interested in complaining about the problem, than fixing it. One option you might want to investigate, is 3D printing a replacement latch.

It was a real problem. Two of my Nikon F601 cameras broke their door locks sitting in a drawer! Plastic clasp, sprung metal lock, constant pressure = junk camera. One company offered replacement metal clasps for Nikons on ebay. It wasn't user error, it was Nikon competing downmarket and sacrificing R&D. Old Nikons didn't have metal doors and clasps for nothing. Maybe the old guys had retired taking common sense with them?

Lack of awareness makes you an ass? Really. Ok then, can you tell me the difference between a bevel-up plane and a bevel-down plane? If not then I guess you're an ass too.

So if I were to google the difference and asscertain some awareness, would I gain a different level of assitude or still be considered an ass or maybe just a semi-ass.

My DI (drill instructor for the civilians) called me a wiseass to which I responded that it was better than being a dumbass! I thought it was funny at the time I said it but he didn't think so . . .

Geez Chip take a pill. Calling people an ass might be funny in your circles but us old farts don't appreciate it. I've been using Nikons since 1973. Lots of them. Lots of different models. Beat the crap out of them. Never had a back break on me unless I did something really stupid.

You are in luck! I have some. This rare item is available for limited time only. YES, you can apply it to the front of your camera as well as side. While it may not be a perfect fit, it will make your camera sticky all over. I mean, who wouldn't like a sticky camera, right?
