Nikon Pistol Grip and Release Cable

I have just bought a Nikon pistol grip together with the correct cable to connect to the release on my Nikon F2a. It came without the necessary adapter to screw over the F2a's release but it does not fire the shutter. It appears that the camera end of the cable is not protruding out of the release sheath far enough to make contact and depress the release.

Without the adapter, it will fit onto my Nikon FT3 and fire the shutter. It will also fire several other non-Nikon cameras. When using an ordinary 3rd party cable release, the adapter works probably because the cable end protrudes about 1/2"

The adapter I have, I know is not a genuine Nikon item, but still fits. the body length gives the impression that the internal screw on adapter body is too long with and too deep. Because of this the end of the cable only protrudes about 1/4" when fully extended. Does anyone know the correct name/code for a genuine Nikon adapter, hopefully this will work,

You may need to switch out the cable release with one that has a longer release.

I could not decipher the original post, there is some confusing wording.

I think the OP got a Nikon pistol grip, and a cable release with the standard small tip (?), and an adapter to allow it to screw over the larger diameter outer thread on the Nikon F2. This thread is found on the Nikon F, F2, some Leicas, some Rollei TLRs, some Japanese TLRs. And it doesn't work because the adapter is too long or the release throw is too short. Part of what is confusing me is that the OP said "correct cable to connect to the release," but if it doesn't work, it's not the correct cable.

Nikon sold an AR-2 which is a cable release that natively has the larger thread without an adapter. I don't know if there was an official Nikon adapter or Nikon part number for it. They are sometimes called "Leica cable adapters" or "Leica nipples" and used to be easy to find, but last time I looked they were more expensive or PITA to get.
