Nikon N90s Vari-Program

When I shot with an N60 I didn't use these settings much,if at all.My N90s has even more detailed V-P's and a few look interesting,like silhouette.Just wondering how many users of this fine camera shoot in the vari-program mode?

To tell you the truth they don't really work for me. The program modes have a habit of getting confused and flashing random warning LEDs when it should be firing the shutter. I think they are probably just a gimmick for the benefit of the marketing types and sales people.

I much prefer the greater control of the aperture priority "A" mode. Silhouettes can be made by changing the exposure compensation (+/-), with the obligatory bracketing.

In fact, if I remember rightly, modes like "Portrait" just set the lens to a certain preset aperture, f/4 I think it was. "Landscape" was set to f/8.

I don't use them at all. I also tend to use aperture priority.

They would be good for shooters without a lot of experience, but most of those sorts of shooters shoot digital these days.

I never used them once I got a non-G lens and started doing manual exposure.

Thanks folks.Pretty much what I thought.I've used full manual cameras for years and will stick to my own criteria for determining exposure.

On my two N90s bodies, I stay with "A" aperture priority or full manual mode. I do the same with the F-100 bodies. The V-P modes are unpredictable, in my experience.

I've used an F-90X (N-90s) for a number of years and found the usefulness of most settings only marginal, excepting for silhouette mode, which worked fine. IMO, you're better off adjusting your own settings.

I too primarily use the aperture priority mode. When I got my first N90s body, I had no AF lenses to go with it. As a consequence, I was forced to use that mode along with either center weighted or spot metering. Matrix metering is unavailable with the older MF lenses. When I got a couple of AF lenses, I started playing around with the various program modes and found them to be just so much fluff. The option of using the matrix metering system and especially TTL flash does come in handy at times.

Yes, it will show up as "SL" in your display.

I use the F100's much more often than the N90s bodies, but I find the N90s bodies to be well designed and built.

I've always had a soft spot for the F90X, despite the fact I use my F100s for most everything.
