...I've got an N80 that works fine except after it's been on the shelf for a while. Generally, right after I take the first shot with it after the camera's been on the shelf for a few days the low battery indicator shows half full (after powering up as full) and the camera won't fire again. If I then power the camera off and back on again it works fine. The batteries (2 x CR123A) are nowhere near their expected lifetime - any ideas? Anyone else experienced this?

How long on the shelf? An automotive battery will do kind of the same thing. New off the shelf and installed into a car, say, a newer Sebring (or any newer model for that matter) and left there not running for a month it will go below the point of starting the vehicle. There are micro amp draws from the ECM's memory, whatever else that can add up when the alternator is not run (engine running) in order to recharge it. Could be something like that. Start it up and run for a pic or two and the battery has yawned and stretched and is good to go. Day or two, shouldn't be doing that. Month or more at a time, could explain it I guess.

FEE

do you also get a blinking FEE?

my N75 did this until it finally quit, with new batteries all is good

batteries had about a dozen rolls to go before they quit

do you also get blank frames or skipped spaces?

Yes (FEE) - no blank frames or skipped spaces - I'll try fresh batteries, eventhough the current ones should be good. BTW, I also have an N75 with the MB-18 grip - I've never had a similar problem with it - I wonder if 4 AAs just work better for some reason than CR2s (N75) or CR123As (N80)?

I mean, you could just replace one of the batteries as opposed to all of them
it would be cheaper than worrying about it
