That's cool, but everyone knows that stock won't move at $500. I think this and a vivitar are the only new film cameras I see marketed to students in freestyles catalog besides the toy cameras.

The USD and GBP in retail shops always been the same.

Dont think any students going to buy new you can get used K1000s for third the price even if every Aug to Oct the prices inflate for the art uni students.

Lots buy K1000s anyway.

for 100-150 dollars more you can get a decent Leica M2 or M3. or for 200 dollars less you could get a beautiful F3 or FE2/FM2.

Sure you need a lens but...

That said, the fact that they are marketing them is what's important, not what you could get used for the same price. I will also add that many universities cannot easily procure used gear, having contracts with suppliers such as MAC et al. For them, a set of 8-10 brand new 35mm SLRS with lenses at this price is actually a very good deal.

I wouldnt buy them new but in this digital market, analogue cameras marketed and sold brand new is good. Whether lomo or Nikon/cosina.

Not to mention the fact that brand new means they're under warrantee as well, which will be of obvious advantage to anyone who's spent time in a college photo dept.

Well, it is certainly more expensive in the UK, but the difference is not quite as vast as it first appears. Remember that B&H's price does not include sales tax while the UK price includes VAT at 20%.

They will probably get a discount through contracts to suppliers, and will receive complete, identical working cameras with matched lenses that are under warrantee. An FM10, while not an F series, will last for a very long time if treated decently, the warrantee somewhat obviates abuse by students.

Having been a TA for my professors at school, as well as giving private instruction to students when I was at university...if I were a professor at a university or college looking to create a stable photo program, I would jump at a package of 10-15 of these kits immediately. Especially over having to cobble together equivalent sets of FE/FM/F3/OM/X/K/M/etc cameras. And doing so would be immensely more cost effective in terms of time and ease of use to the educator. It's far easier to teach a class of 15 students on 15 identical cameras than having to wrestle with bullshit like "well yours is like this but then this one is like this and that one over there is like this".

edit: not to mention the fact that if someone does need a replacement, the pool of spares will be the same camera that they are used to. we have to remember that we are precisely NOT the audience this announcement is for.

You raise an interesting point here but I wonder how many, if any, U.K. educational institutions fund film cameras for its students and loan them out for the duration of the course?

Any U.K. APUGers here have any knowledge? My guess is it will be precious few but I may be wrong.

My school expected students to have their own cameras for the most part, but we did have Nikkormats with 50/1.4 and 50/2s if someone needed a loaner. My school had a very, very small budget for its photography program, and I already had/was acquiring my own gear so I never needed it, but having co-taught a course where essentially every student had a different camera...I can tell you I wish they all had the same equipment.

Edit: Re: Tom, if you don't mind, may I infer that you were in school when film was still the go-to media of photography? Many schools these days, now that digital is the standard, will either require their students to buy a camera, or supply them with one from a gear cage.

Yes, film was the go-to or mainstream media and virtually everything printed in the darkroom. We did have scanners etc. but as more of an adjunct.

Our 2nd market is more expensive pounds and dollars the same.

In the past colleges provided kit for students eg Leicas and Pentax now unlikely as degree students get loans they pay fees to college any buy personal system cameras,
Many colleges only teach digital and use power point...
Some won't (ie don't) even have a film camera in glass case DSLR only power point.

My reason for posting the link wasn't to convince anyone to buy one. I certainly couldn't justify spending that much - especially when I have plenty of cameras already.

It was just nice to see that they have faith in the market and that they think there is still a demand - either that or they have a lot of old stock to get rid of!!
