The eyepiece or viewfinder on my cameras collects dust and it's easy enough to clean off with a brush, blower and cleaning pen. But just inside the camera and just past the glass diopter is another glass element that gets very dusty and I have never attempted to clean it. I understand it doesn't actually affect image quality, but still...

Anyone have advice or ever tried to tackle that cleaning job?

It could be dust on the focusing screen or behind it. Try first blowing the focusing screen. If it is still there, take the focusing screen off, blow the pentaprism, blow the focusing screen and put it back. Hopefully you will be having no dust at all. Have in mind that if there is any persistent marks that do not go off by blowing, never rub the focusing screen.

Simpler to ignore.

Do you mean the glass of the pentaprism just under the eyepiece?

I clean those with a Q-Tip and either windex or lens cleaner. Don't slop too much in there in case it runs off into places you don't want it. I had a really filthy one on a FA that had no eyepiece, and I started by blotting the dust with a moist Q-Tip to lift most of it off first in case the dust was gritty.

I don't mess with trying to clean the focus screen or prism on the other side, inside the camera. Scratches there are visible when focusing. A little scratch close to the eye is invisible. My FA is getting a CLA, and we'll see how clean the viewfinder is when it gets back. It was full of the disintegrated foam rubber crud from the light seal.

Ick.

What he said. JRoosa that is.
BTW, that is the back surface of the prism.
