I've been working on a rechargeable battery solution for the Nikon F5 and just finished Version 2.0 of the design. Thought some of you might be interested.

Fetaures:
  • 3S 18650 lithium-ion setup (11.1V nominal)
  • Includes proper BMS for safe charging/protection
  • 3D printed housing that mounts with original screws
  • Single charging port (5.5mm barrel jack)
You'll need a spot welder for the battery connections - it's really the only safe way to connect 18650s. Also basic soldering skills for the BMS and charging connections. Total cost is around $30-40 in components plus the 3D print.

Been using it for several months now and it works great. Charges overnight and easily powers the F5 through multiple rolls. The BMS handles balancing and protection, so it's much safer than rigging something without proper battery management.

Files and instructions are up on Thingiverse if anyone wants to build one. Fair warning - this involves lithium batteries and spot welding, so it's not a beginner project. But if you're comfortable with that level of DIY, it's a solid upgrade from hunting down expensive original batteries.
