Magnification is higher than the F3 especially the F3HP but the information protrudes into the image area. The LED blind me so the shutter speed or aperture is hard to read. The aperture direct readout and the shutter speed at the bottom suffer the same in low light.
I have really no problem with the F3 display. All the F series cameras Nikon took care not to have any of the information protrudes into the image area because it's silly to have 100% accurate viewfinder and put some numbers to block out the view.

Yes; agreed. That finder is all over the place and the brightness of the LED's is distracting to say the least. And that is one strike against the F5, there's no way to turn off the finder info light which hinders the low light focussing accuracy; your eye stops down too much in reaction to the finder light and the screen looks dim in relation. The F3 and F4 with its on/off finder light is much better.

I wish that they had done the finder info they way Canon did in the A1. Red LEDs that dim in dark lighting. I don't like the info it gives, just the way it shows it. It is at least out of the frame.

That miniscule intrusion is nothing. Obviously you never shot one. The LED brightness is one of the highlights not draw backs of this.

I use the XD-11 for about only 5 rolls of film max. I had it for about 7 years and still have it.

I can appreciate the 100% viewfinders in the Nikons F, F2 & F3. Clearly Nikon elected to satisfy the need of those who need more eye relief than those who prefer viewfinder magnification.

100 % view finder's can be a problem if you shoot slides because of the masking on the slide mounts and most negative carries unless you file them.out don't show 100 % either. I find the Canon F1' s 97% viewfinder ideal.If the O.P needs a camera that works at most shutter speeds without a battery I suggest he gets himself a New Canon F1 because even without a battery it works at all shutter speeds from 1/90th to 1/2000 X and B http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/canonf1n/shutter/index.htm
