Nikon F2 long exposure w/ self-timer not working

The self-timer on my F2 works, it will count down and fire the shutter at the end of the time. However it will not work as the long exposure timer. I set the shutter speed to bulb, set the collar around the shutter release to T, and set the self-timer. But, when I press the release the self-timer begins but shutter fires right away, acting as if it is on bulb.
Does anyone know what the issue might be or where the mechanical gears that control this are located? I don't mind taking off a bottom plate or anything like that. I think the issue might be with the camera not recognizing that I have set the collar to T. Any ideas?

That is exactly how its supposed to work. With those settings, the self timer no longer delays before firing the shutter. The self timer now times the length of exposure time as marked - 2 to 10 seconds.

Yes, but the shutter will only stay open as long as I have the shutter release depressed. It will not stay open for the duration of the self timer.

Just tested with a second F2 body I have and this F2 works as if the collar is not being set to T. I get the same result on the second F2 body if I set everything the same but have the collar set to the center. So I believe the problem is with the collar not setting the body correctly to T.

That clarifies your first post - that the shutter fires (opens shutter) then the shutter closes before the timed exposure expires.
What's the chances of two bodies exhibiting the same trouble . . .

Correct. Maybe I wasn't the most clear. The second body works as it is supposed to. The first body will not time its exposure. It acts as if it is in bulb mode whether or not the collar is set to the middle detente or T. The second body will act as if it is in bulb on the center detente but will time the exposure correctly when set to T (which is the correct operation). This leads me to think that it is something in the collar that is not engaging.

Even when set to T the shutter speed at B, it will close when I release the button.

When the shutter speed is set to B, the self timer will wind down and then once it gets to the end the shutter will open to about half a second and close whether or not the collar is set to the middle or T. The camera will function as normal when the self timer lever is used at other shutter speeds.
