Nikon F100 'program shift' (also F80)

The Nikon F100 manual states

In Programmed Auto, by rotating the Main-Command Dial you can change the combination of shutter speed and aperture while maintaining correct exposure. With this function, you can shoot in Programmed Auto as though you were shooting in Shutter-Priority Auto or Aperture-Priority Auto.

No matter what direction that I move the main (rear) command dial to shift the program, if the light then changes the aperture stays fixed and the shutter speed moves to compensate, ie simulating Aperture-Priority Auto rather than Shutter-Priority Auto. Is there some way to do the shift that would fixate the Shutter Speed or was Nikon just being a bit loose with their description?"

F/N80 seems the same.

I'm only going off memory here , but when you set up the custom functions didn't you assign the control dial to to either aperture or shutter speed ?
In which case you need to set it in the custom functions to your preference .
I never use programme mode on any of my cameras , they tend to be permanently set to aperture priority unless it's the rare occasion where I need to shoot shutter priority or full manual .

I don't think Nikon's explanation is wrong .
The camera sets the two values to suite the lighting with the focal length and distance of the lens taken into account .
If the light remains the same , as you alter one setting the other us automatically corrected .
If the light changes , the camera corrects the difference .
Being in programme mode your still giving mist if the control to the camera .
If you need more control of the shutter speed , that's why they give you shutter priority .
You just need to keep an eye on the AV .

I just tried this on my F80. I point the camera out of the window, spin the main command dial and both aperture and shutter values change. Then I move the camera to point indoors and both values change to the new light without me having to spin the dial.

F/N80 seems the same.

My F80 behaves the same. But I have custom functions set and I'm sure it's because of that. I think you should look up what the user manual says.
