Nikon F photographers.

It'd be interesting to put together a similar list of influential Nikon users over the years. I know M. Kenna worked with Nikon F cameras early on, before moving on to Hasselblad.

Michael Kenna (early 35mm stuff)
Pete Turner (early stuff anyway)

I know Peter and David Turnley both started out with an F2 Photomic that they bought and shared when they were in high school. I went to the same school 20 yrs later and had the same photography teacher! The teacher had a framed newspaper article on the classroom wall showing the Turnleys together after they became famous, in the 80s, and it shows each with an F3 equipped with an MD4 motor. Mike Johnson has mentioned several times in recent years that Peter uses Leicas now.

Neil Leifer, the great sports photographer, certainly used an F back in the '60s, and probably still is a Nikon guy.

Don't forget the dude from "The Bridges of Madison County"....

It's hard to think of top pro photographer of the late 50's, 60's and 70's, who didn't use at least one Nikon F, they were standard equipment before the first Canon F1 came out in 1971 there was no realistic S.L.R. alternative if you needed a camera that could pound in 6" nails and still have it work afterwards .

Salgado in start had also used nikon - not sure was it F, but it was nikon. "Other Americas" was done with nikon (IMHO his best work).

Yea, this is what i've been reading online. There was a Nikon ad in the 60's that said, "Today, there is almost no other choice."

I get that, but discussing who used what gear when is interesting. I can tell you the camera every photographer I like uses. Gear is not as unimportant as some think. There aren't many sports photographers using pinholes. Give Clapton a walmart guitar and yea, he'll make it sound decent, until the neck breaks, or the bridge cracks. The tone will be shit, but yea, he could make music on it. Give him a 61' start and he will blow your mind. Gear matters.

How about an obscure famous photographer, well somewhat obscure depending on how old you are. I remember Gina Lollobrigida, an Italian actress from the early 1950's to maybe 1970, put out a book called "Mia Italia", and she's on the cover holding a Nikon FTN. I used to have this book, and remember a couple of photos of her in disguise with two black Nikons going around Italy taking pictures of her favorite places. In fact I believe she did some photojournalist work for a few years in the early 70's, even scoring one of the first interviews with Fidel Castro.
Hey, like it's been mentioned, so many photographers famous or not used the Nikon F. (me included, and I still have 4 of them)

Richard W. Brown from Vermont, USA. He has several books out and mainly used a couple of Nikon F2 cameras. His book, "Pictures from the Country" was influential on me in the early '90s and I still like to look at it from time to time. http://www.rwbrownphotography.com

only one was a Stradivarius and her own instrument was not full size cause she was small, a big step.

They're good for starting fires, though. You can use the lens from an F as a burning glass.
