Nikon F broken

I was given a Nikon F and I got my photos back and half of them were grey and the other half were fine but 1/3d or 2/3d of the images were cut off by black? Any suggestions Why?

Shooting above max synch speed with flash is possible. But shutter service is likely if not. They're usually quite tough but a camera pushing 50 may need some TLC.

well it posted one of them a bunch but you can see the bottom one is what happened bunch and the right one is confusing me.

Sorry, but it looks to me like your shutter needs servicing.

If this is the F that you had trouble with the foam disintegrating in, that's likely the cause.

Another broken F. I took off the Large Ph viewfinder to replace it with a prisum. UGGGGG now neither will "lock" in. Whoa is me. Red

What shutter speed? Definitely yours is capping. Hopefully it's not doing it at too many shutter speed settings.

I got an F this time last year -- a really cosmetically challenged one. 1/1000 didn't work, but with exercise (and warmer weather) it came around. It's starting to do it again, but I figure I can live with 1/500 as a top speed if need be.

Sure looks like capping to me as well. You will find that this becomes worse (less image) the higher the shutter speed. Generally should be ok up to aroumd 1/250th. You can do a quick and dirty check by opening the back, putting the lens on max aperture and pointing the camera at a light source. Looking at the shutter, start fiting it off at say, 1/30th and you should see a definite circle. Keep upping the speeds to see if that circle remains, harder to see when the speeds increase.If your shutter is indeed capping, you will see a dark area on one side, becoming more so as speeds increase, until there may be no light coming through at all on the top speed.
No great drama as any good tech can srevice the shutter for you and your F will live foe a long time.

Just received my first F yesterday in beautiful condition after some cleaning. 1 sec does not work at all but the rest are not far off. I expected that as my F2 have the same problem.
This new to me F is so nice that it is worth a good overall service to bring it back to a new life. Wonderful camera to look at.

Knock on wood, I haven't had any problems from any of my Nikons beside the FA that I had to return. Even my 45 year young F is still accurate but that doesn't mean I won't send it in for preventative service soon.

Ah so that's what you call it. I've a couple cameras I do that with. Watch the shutter through the back at 1000, 500, 250 and as necessary, rule out using 1000 or 500 until you get it cleaned.

I rarely have problems once I set these firm boundaries on my old cameras. The great lenses that fit these cameras make it all worthwhile.

Likely from being used to pound nails when not being used to take pictures . . .

Nothing wrong with >50 year old cameras that a little TLC can't fix . . .

ok so i did that and at 250th and 500th and 1000th there was bassicly no image circle showing
