This is a funky little item. I'm not sure which Nikon gear it's supposed to work with. (F2 maybe)? I grabbed it for use on a Fuji gw series rangefinder. On the GW670III the whole assembly screws right into the eyepiece threads. I mainly wanted a rubber eyecup, so I went a bit overboard, but it worked.
The smaller section with the black cap is where the threads are. this allows the eyecup and the magnification section to flip up and out of your way.
