Nikon Coolscan 8000 vs 9000

I would love to get my hands on one of these scanners. Apparently you cannot purchase the 9000 new anymore?

Prices on ebay seem to be around $1500 for the 8000 and $3000 for the 9000. So what are the differences between these two scanners? Is the 9000 really worth double the price? I'm looking to scan 120 black and white negatves and some color for output on inkjet.

I was thinking to buy Nikon 9000 last year but i couldn't due to budget until it get discontinued, and not they are sold as used and the price getter much higher than before i better look at a drum scanner, my V750 hold its value against Nikon, and i know that Nikon beat Epson for 35 and 120, but Nikon can't scan LF sheets, and i see scans of 4x5 from Epson beating my scans on same scanner for 120 MF rolls, but someone said that Nikon 120 scan will beat Epson 4x5 or even 8x10 scans.

I think the difference is only slight; not worth 2x the price. I have had both and currently use a 8000. The image attached to this post is a very recent example of a scan by my 8000 of New Portra 160. I do not think the 9000 would do better.

For black and white, I would recommend you use C41 so you can use the ICE feature. Infrared ICE - which both the 8000 and 9000 use - will not work on standard B&W film because of the composition of the emulsion.

It's an old thread and much has changed since 2011. There's the new Plustek OpticFilm 120. For N. America, it seems Nikon USA and Canada aren't supporting the high-end Coolscans any longer--something that's bugging out owners of these pricey scanners.

As CGW said, there is no support and the resale price of these scanners is out of sight. With the advent of the Plustek scanner the only way I'd buy another 8000 and or 'upgrade' to a 9000 would be if I got a tremendous deal on it.

How is the new Plustek? It's price - $2000 - is not cheap. The Nikon 8000 scanners regularly sell for less. I have not been able to find any reviews of the Plustek.

My post assumes the Plustek is as good as their 35mm scanners which puts them in the ballpark of the 8000/9000. The Plustek comes with a warranty and a known history any 8000/9000 you buy is out of warranty, and at a price near or below 2k (I've only seen the 8000 come in under 2k) an unknown history. There are a few 9000 being peddled as NIB, but these go for 4k.
