To scan B&W 35mm film (in 6 frame strips), can I use the 5000 scanner right out of the box, or do I need to buy an accessory? I just purchase the Nikon 5000, and wonder if I should've purchased some sort of accessory for scanning B&W 35mm film.
Just connect the LS 5000 to your computer, start the software (disable the ICE option for B&W) and scan. It's straightforward, really. The only accessory you'll ever need is a slide feeder if you want to scan 99 framed/mounted slides as a batch.
Well, the LS 5000 doesn't have film holders, you just insert the film strips. However, the strip is limited to 6 frames. If you have a complete strip with 36 frames you need to purchase a separate unit which is attached to the back of the scanner and works like a take up spool. This unit is around 500 to 600 US$ or Euros.
Another weak point of the LS 5000: you can't scan a single unmounted slide - it's too short for the feeder and would stick in the path...
Everyone, thanks for the information. It so happens that I cut my rolls into 6 framed strips, so it looks like I'll be good to go, once the scanner arrives.
Thanks for that link...
I've just started using a Coolscan IV with lots of negs - has anyone tried the the same mod on an older scanner? I've not looked inside it yet...
I've just read a little more and realised that the coolscan IV can't support an SA-30 - it doesn't have a film gate at the back of the unit and has got nowhere for a long roll of film to go!
I guess I'll leave my SA-21 alone and feed it negs 6 at a time.
