I saw a bunch of Nikon F100's on ebay with broken latches on the film backs, so out of curiosity I sent a note to Nikon Canada to see how much a replacement one costs. Here's the response:

Hello [Skorpiius],

Thank you for contacting Nikon Canada.

Unfortunately, we no longer carry parts for this film SLR camera.

All models excluded from the following list no longer have parts available or are accepted for any type of service with Nikon Canada.

Huh, they don't even repair FM10's or F6's? that doesn't seem right. They still offer these Film cameras for sale.

I had two of my F100 repaired last year. At that time, I was told US facility will cease repair operations on them in few months.

Keep in mind though, base repair fee for F100 was $200. With it, you get basic cleaning and very basic repair. Anything else will be additional. The service was available, but was not economically feasible in many cases....

There are still plenty of shops that will work on the older cameras.

Only as long as they have the parts. I took a camera that appeared to be dead and changed the batteries. It still appeared to be dead. I took it to Samys and they said if it needed an new circuit board then they would not be able to repair it. They replaced the batteries that I had put in and the camera started working. It turns out that one of the "new" batteries had low voltage [The second time this year that I bought new batteries and one of the was almost dead.]. So I bought one more battery and it was back in business. I am making the point that Nikon slr cameras can be repaired as long as any needed parts are available.

Nikon India has stopped this a good while ago.
While I do have a working f100 and considering getting another as backup, the parts availability as well electronics components make me feel much wiser to buy a couple of f/2/3s instead.

Sic Transit.

I still recall the day in January 2006 when I learned that Nikon had ceased production of film cameras. ( Other than the F6, and the atrocious FM10. I went out and shot a roll of Tri-X in my venerable S2, with 50mm. F/2 Nikkor. Later I discovered from other contacts that I was by no means alone that day.

My wife and I still shoot exclusively with Nikon F2 cameras ( the second F2 photomic bought as a second or parts mule ) My original Nikkormat, and one Fm2n. I then and still consider my own F2 with plain prism as "The Last Adult Nikon",it is my "Main Axe"

( Unfortunately the S2 ( sans lens at the time) was dropped and damaged last year; due to the death of Pete Smith, the four lenses were disposed of.)

This was an old problem with cameras of other makes for years.

I started out in the early 70's repairing cameras, and even back then one of the big problems that caused me to quit was getting parts. While the big names like Nikon and Canon were better, some of the others had dropped selling parts after the 7 requirement was up. It seemed like a camera would come on the market and take 2 years for it to become popular, then they would sell them for 5 more years and at the end of the 7 year cycle, certain parts were no longer to be found. If it wasn't parts, repair manuals were in short supply. I suppose the day will come when all film shooters will be left with only large format equipment. At least then you just toss the shutter and install a new one. I notice the list has my Nikon digital and that makes me really ticked. Digitals cost so much and the lenses are out of this world. It makes me regret that I sold my Mamiya RB pro s and bought a digital, except for the instant pictures.

The answer to this problem is buy up a couple of F2 series(F2 Photomic, F2A, F2AS, etc) and you'll have someone to work on it that knows those cameras inside and out...Sover Wong.

Problem with that is that the shutters are no longer being made, at least many of them. Parts for relatively simple mechanical devices can often be fabricated, however, and we can always use Packard shutters, or barrel lenses and a black card or hat for longer exposures. Sigh.

I was really concerned about my F2A's shutter. It seems the idiots at APS where it was last supposedly CLA's had botched up the camera and didn't even open it up to see if anything was amuck. I sent it to Sover after sending a few photos of the problem and he even was concerned about the repair. If anyone has parts for the F2 it's him.

Fortunately it turns out the culprit was a busted battery compartment hampering the movement of the shutter curtains where they wouldn't come together and was causing light leaks. Had it not been for him I'd just have a nice looking paper weight.

The problem...
