Nikon 9000 shipped yesterday

J and R shipped my Nikon 9000 scanner yesterday. Might signal availability of these scanners if anyone else was looking to buy. Could be quite a backlog as these have not been readily available since mid January.

What should be the proper set up sequence for this scanner? I'm using Windows XP professional.

Any thoughts regarding glass carriers for 120 film?

Wet mount, yes or no?

I have the 8000; it is very similar to the 9000.

Can't tell you about the Windows setup sequence as I'm a Mac user.

The glass negative carrier is a MUST if you are to get maximal edge-to-edge sharpness with 120 film.

Wet mounting is a PITA and the incremental image improvement, if any, is not worth the trouble IMO.

Thanks for the feedback. Are you using the Nikon glass negative carrier or a 3rd party device?

Get a glass carrier. I have one for my Nikon 8000. Don't bother with wet mount in this machine.

I have both glass and a wet mount system, I'm sure I will use the regualr 120, glass 120, and wet mount film in the future. The glass holder (at least mine) has diffused glass on the light side, which gives the same effect as a diffuse enlarger head will give you, it is also not anti-newton so you may get newton rings. Even on relatively flat film the regular 20 holder is a weak link. Good for rapid mounting to cull the good from the bad, but that is about it. Wet mount gives flat film and no newton rings, and no diffuse glass so the edges are sharper like with the regular holder.

Also note that a new glass holder costs as much or slightly more than my wet mount kit. Even on ebay they go for around $200+.

Get the 869 G glass holder with Anti Newton glass - it's worth every cent and will save you a lot of trouble.

I've never had any Newton rings.

Set up is simple if you install the NikonScan software. However, I can't recommend it, instead you might think about VueScan Pro - it's worlds better than the NikonScan.

I'm planning to get the 869G as soon as I get some rolls of 120 film developed. Just don't take that many medium format pictures yet! :rolleyes:

You can use the licence on a PC and a Mac and Linux.
The same user interface for almost any scanner you will connect - it supports more than 750 scanners (NikonScan just supports Nikon scanners, and Silverfast only the model you've purchased the licence for)
You can even use VueScan as an image editor by re-scanning a TIF or JPEG
It doesn't bug your registry ! ! !

WOW!! All that for 80.00 bucks!!

I'm going to get it for sure now. I've been reading Scanning Negatives and Slides by Sascha Steinhoff. There's a nice review of Nikon Scan, VueScan, and Silverfast in the book.

The doesn't mess up your computer may be the best free part. NikonScan causes my computer to crash when I shut down for the night, a real pain.

There is a user manual for Viewscan that you can download, looks pretty thorough.

I have no problem with Vuescan. Have used it with a few scanners and it is ok. I have not used it with the LS-9000.

For the scanners I have used, I like Silverfast more than Vuescan. That would be especially true for scanning color negatives and trannies.

You will likely be using the LS-9000 for a long tiime, so initial cost of the software should be a minor factor.

Just my two cents worth of opinion.
