I just received a free Nikon Nikkor 50mm 1.4. And sadly the focus ring won't turn past 1m. From infinity to 1m and it just stops no matter how much force I use. What could be the problem?

Has it been disassembled? If someone was inside it could just be junk on the helicals.

Previous owner might have been gorilla, stop attempting force, either take apart, or send for repair.

I haven't dissembled it. It was found in the bottom of a dresser with an F3 and a bunch of other stuff about 10 years ago. It was recently passed on to me.

Hello.
can you focus beyond infinity or does the focus ring stop exactly at the infinity mark when you focus at subject at about 1000 feet? Maybe the lens block has been inserted after cleaning or lubricating into a wrong entrance of the helicoid thread by somebody who did not know how to re-assemble it correctly.

It stops exactly at infinity.

It's possible the helical has been misthreaded by one thread. The symptoms are right.

If you can do Inf to 1M accurately, my advice is to leave it alone for now and use it as is.

If you got it for nothing it's worth paying to have it serviced by a professional repairer.
