Hi everyone, I am setting up a Nikkormat FT2 camera, which is in mint condition: bought by my uncle about 50 years ago and – by how it looks – never used.
I had it for a while and used it only once. As it came with no battery, I had used an external light meter. The camera works perfectly.
Now my Nikon FM – which I use on a regular basis and prefer it over the FT2 – has an issue with the light meter, that is not working properly anymore (I have opened a different thread for it).
While the issue on the FM is (hopefully) being fixed, I am going to use the FT2, so I must get the proper battery. I have searched on the web and found… well, a bit of confusion about the topic.
The user manual states that a standard 1.5 silver oxide battery is needed. A user on a forum reports that the camera is working perfectly with 303/357 battery. Another user reports that he is using a WeinCell MRB675 insted. Another one confirms that he is using Duracell 675 batteries (which could be an equivalent of the WeinCell?).
Who is right? Can the camera work with different kind of batteries? My understanding is that the voltage is different so that would sound strange to me...
I have some spare 357 batteries at home, but I want to make sure they are correct before trying them on in order avoid accidental damage to the camera.
What are your experiences related to this?
Thank you

Duracell 357 meets the manual requirement of 1.5V and chemical composition (Silver Oxide), If it is too small for the compartment use a rubber o-ring around it to make it fit..

EDIT: S76 cross-references to the 357 so it's a direct fit.

The Nikkormat FT2 uses a SR44, S76, or 357 battery. The reason you're seeing conflicting reports is that people are confused: its predecessor the Nikkormat FT or FTn uses a different-sized mercury PX625 battery that is no longer produced, and for which people substitute a Wein cell, or the alkaline PX625A (correct shape, slightly wrong voltage), and so on.

Thank you all.
I had installed the sr44 battery and now the camera works perfectly.
@reddesert thank you, now I see why people were giving conflicting reports: they were assuming all nikkormats were the same! Not making a difference between the various models.
