Nikkormat Aperture Indexing Problem - Repair Shop Recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a good camera repair shop that will work on a Nikkormat EL? My googling indicates that many shops don’t like working on them due to concerns about the electronics.

For what it’s worth, the problem seems to be mechanical, not electronic. The meter coupling ring isn’t indexing lenses properly. When I mount a lens, say my 100-300mm f/5.6 zoom, and do the “Nikon shuffle” of twisting to minimum aperture, then back to maximum, the camera isn’t registering the correct maximum aperture. The little red tab on the side of the lens mount lines up with the wrong value; the camera thinks my f/5.6 lens is really somewhere between f/2.8 and f/5.6 (it varies each time). This screws with the metering; tests show that it’s giving me about one stop of overexposure on average. I like using the auto-exposure function, and I’m partial to slide film, so that’s a problem.

If I had to guess, I’d say that a gear/lever/tab inside the aperture coupling ring has worn out. I know it’d be cheaper to get another body on eBay, but this camera is special: it’s my first one, the one that got me into photography, and I’ve had it since middle school. So I’m rather attached to it.

There's nothing wrong. When mounting any lens f3.5 and higher, it is necessary to push the pin all the way to the right before mounting the lens. This is very typical of all Nikkormats. Take my word for it. When you dismount any lens 3.5 and higher the travel distance the ring is turned isn't enough to null the scale. I'm the Nikkormat expert extraordinaire of this site

I wish it were so easy, but nope. Tried again just now, ensuring the pin was all the way to the right when I mounted. Still won’t index properly. The maximum aperture mark slides past the proper value, coming to rest at a faster setting. I’d upload a picture, but this site seems to think pictures from my phone are too big.

The problem isn’t unique to slow lenses like my f/5.6 zoom, either. The same thing happens with my 50mm f/1.4 - the camera frequently thinks that it’s an f/1.2 lens. My 45mm f/2.8 registers just a tad too fast, too.

Sorry about your problem. I quit working in Nikkormats a few months ago.

This sounds like a fairly simple repair...although I definitely do not recommend trying to do-it-yerself.

I definitely recommend **NOT** sending it to California Precision Services in Sacramento. This guys insists that you pay a **non-refundable** $45 "diagnostic fee" before he'll say anything about the cost to repair or even the very fact of whether or not he can repair the camera.

I've had mixed results from Albuquerque Photo Technologies, Inc. They seem to consistently over promise and under deliver...and their prices are rather high.

The problem with Nikkormats and all old Nikons, is that Nikon will no longer sell repair parts to independent repair shops. So most independents have decided to not repair any Nikons anymore at all.

Anyway, Zack's might be a good choice. I'm a little put off by their slogan, "We do the impossible"...what about routine maintenance? Surely that's not impossible.
Since this is a pretty simple thing to repair, you might also try some of these...

Thanks for all those helpful suggestions. Fingers crossed that it’s a simple as you say! The camera is otherwise in fantastic shape (aside from some spots in the prism).

I’ve reached out to Vermont Camera Works, and I think I’ll send the body up to them once I’ve finished the roll inside it. They seem to focus on old cameras, and I’ve read good things about them.

Please post a follow-up. I’m always looking to add good repair shops to the list.
