I thought the honorary membership a couple of years ago was a bit inappropriate; but the patronage is normal (by UK standards, at any rate) and was to be expected, eventually.

I am glad that someone is carrying the photographic standard.

What can the lad be looking at on the back of the camera? Maybe in that rectangle built on the back of the camera is the end of the film package to tell him which film he has loaded? There's not a lot else to look at on the door to the film compartment, is there?

Hang on a minute! It might just be... the speaker slumps forward to reveal a nine inch bayonet in his back. What the lad was looking at will take Marlowe the next 250 pages to work out in the new version of The Big Sleep :D

Well, I was not aware of the Royal Photographic Society before (and I guess Eric was not either...). And in this respect that change in patronage and the resulting media awareness is a good thing...

But if I understand it correcetly this thread is not about the RPS and the new patronage, but about the photographer Kate Middleton.

I'm an avid Raymond Chandler reader; I have all his novels. Eagerly awaiting The Big Sleep II, especially if it involves cameras...

The Queen was active with filming when she was+much younger and in fact before she became+the Queen

For those interested.
I had trouble finding the list of Royal Patronage between Victoria and Elizabeth, so I wrote the RPS and got back this.
May 30 1853 -1901 Victoria
May 30 1853 to 1861 Prince Albert
Jan 1863 Edward, the Prince of Wales
1902 Edward Vll and Queen Alexandra and Vice Patrons George and Mary, the Prince and Princess of Wales
1911-1936 King George V
1920 Edward, the Prince of Wales
1936 Edward Vlll
1937 George Vl
June 3 1952-June 25, 2019 Elizabeth ll
June 26,2019 The Duchess of Cambridge

Also Queen Elizabeth II was frequently seen and photographed using a Leica. There seems to have always been a close relationship between her and the RPS.......Regards!

But the queen not yet had her work exhibitioned or published as book.
In contrast to her relative, late king of Belgium Leopold III.

So what does that have to do with anything. She enjoyed making images which is important.

What has patronage by a royal person to do with photography?

And what means does Kate have other than the glamour factor, by that attracting the media?

Royal patronage is/was the prototype of what is now referred to as an "influencer" - without any need to log into Twitter.

The Duchess of Cambridge is a beautiful elegant lady, who as a member I'm happy to have as a patron of R.P.S.

I think your attitude is coloured more by your distaste for all things "royal" more than anything else. So I suggest you just call a spade a spade and not dance around the edges.

In fairness, that is the point. Royal Patronage adds exposure and cachet and approval. Victoria was a collector, not a photographer. As far as I know neither Edward Vll, George V, Edward Vlll, nor George Vl were particularly known as Photographers. Although Edward Vll's Queen, Alexandra, was.
What is interesting is that this is the first time the patron has not been the ruling monarch or the Price of Wales. By bypassing Charles, a published photographer, (and William) the Family is showing its marketing skills at remaining as relevant as it can be.

As a member of the RPS, I first learned of it when the recent magazine issue showed up... of course they had a big article on her new patronage.

Pretty cool stuff.

Queen consort, not Queen, apparently. I don't know how she will be addressed though.

I believe the Queen Mum was also Queen Consort to George VI. Addressed as your majesty or ma'am.

Not really a problem for me while I was in the same room as Prince Charles years ago, the opportunity for me to speak to Kate is quite remote.

Queen Consorts and Queen Regnants and Dowager Queens are all subsets of Queens and are all referred to as Queen. The Queen Mum was "Queen Elizabeth" until George Vl died and then became "Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother".
