Niagara Falls

Looking for some suggestions for good photo ops in the Niagara Falls area. Of course the Falls itself does not need much introduction so am looking for something off the beaten path. I'll be there 2 and a half days so might have some time away from the Falls area.

Drive down to Letchworth State Park, only an hour or so from NF.

Welland Canal locks, if you dig big infrastructure stuff.
Also, the Niagara escarpment grape region is quite beautiful!
Fort Ticonderoga.
Enjoy! We went in 2000 and had a fabulous trip in the area.

Buffalo Central Terminal might be offering tours. And if not, you can shoot the exteriors anyway. If you are into Urbex, Buffalo has some other cool stuff. The Buffalo Psychiatric center also offers nice tours (Architecture by H.H. Richardson, grounds by the guys that did Central Park). Also some of the Grain Elevators do tours, those are pretty cool also.

Cross the border and go down to the whirlpool.
Once you down, to the right here is hidden waterfall and accses to where whirlpool starts. On the left here is the trail among the Lower Niagara river.
Ontario winery route starts nearby. Last lock before Ontario Lake is fascinating once big ship enters it. They have observation platform where.
Among Niagara after Falls, big Cheese temple and cute botanical garden with butterflies stuffed house. All on Canadian side.

Don't know much about Niagara Falls, but almost everything in western NY looks pretty good in springtime. Buffalo has plenty of sights to see, especially architecture. Check out the Martin House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright... (http://www.martinhouse.org/). If you like ships and boats there's the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park... (http://buffalonavalpark.org/exhibits/ships), featuring the retired guided missile cruiser 'USS Little Rock', plus the WWII submarine 'Croaker' and destroyer 'The Sullivans'. Then there's the Buffalo Maritime Center that features small craft & boatbuilding.... (http://buffalomaritimecenter.org/). I must admit that Buffalo is generally better for sightseeing than Rochester, except perhaps for the George Eastman Museum.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Sadly, I just canceled my hotels for this trip. I got word that my son has fallen behind in school so the family trip is being postponed until another day. I'll keep all these suggestions for future use.

Be SURE to bag your camera well, everyone gets wet! All that said, MOTM is an absolute must for seeing the falls and hearing the thunder!

Well, this is a timely thread for me too - I'll be heading to Toronto later this summer and hope to do a little road trip out to Niagara falls and region for a couple of days. I really want to get some shots of the falls in the very early a.m. or in the evening while I'm there. I was also looking at Buffalo/Rochester but don't think I'll have enough time for it on this trip.

At the Canadian falls, go under the falls, see my avatar. Also go under the falls on the American side. Make sure that you have a plastic cover for the camera.

I lived in the region for a while. Stick with the American side, the Canadian side is plastic-fantastic cut rate Vegas. USA side is still a park and I pray it stays that way. However, I highly recommend walking across rainbow bridge into Canada, the observation deck is .50 or a dollar. You can take the elevator down and stand right next to the falls.

The fun thing about Niagara for photo geeks is to walk around at night, and watch all the "firefly" flashes from peoples' cameras attempting to illuminate the whole falls. The last time I was there film still ruled, so that may not be so common now with cameras that can automatically select ISO 5,000,000 .

I agree with Sirius that the Canadian side is a much better view. If I went to Niagara now, I'd make sure to stop in to the Tesla museum.
