Newbie Wannabe

I've recently noticed various models of Nikonos on The Auction Site for what seem like pretty reasonable prices. (Considering what they originally sold for new.) But before I dive in , I've got a couple of questions:
Is it any riskier buying a used underwater camera than a terrestrial one? I know, caveat emptor and all, but given that they're used in a more demanding environment are they more likely to have problems?
Also, the users' manual recommends replacing the all-important O-rings at least yearly. Some must be replaced by a certified technician. So, are O-rings still available and can you still get servicing done? If so, where?
If anyone's got advice for me, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Underwater is a very risky buy.. all Nikonos are over 20 years old.
Do some google searches although the repair men are a dying breed.
I think if you keep the camera clean and only go 2 or 3 meters down you won't be in for much trouble.
Go deeper and you need to have the deeper non user serviceable seals taken care of.
I bought from this guy earlier in the summer. He knows Nikonos and sells them often... this is a link to one of his current auctions. There are a lot of others that are selling junk.

I did finally load up my Nikonos V and mount the 20mm to it and photograph my daughter swimming. That 20mm is so nice.

I use my IV in the surf and bushwalking for years and never replaced any seals. just kept them lubed and cleaned. Yes, deep work requires some replacements, for sure. And always wash it propoerly in clean water back home.

I would never buy one off ebay as they are so prone to harsh treatment and rough environments. Any picture can hide faults. Buy from a shop or someone you know well, or from a camera fair. I have been ripped severely by ebay sellers quite a few times. It is such a haven for liars and conmen. The virtual anonymity is so attractive for dirtbags. Talk to the camera shop owners - they are typically fair dinkum and serious about their reputation.
