Before I get into trouble here.

I'm having trouble guaging the "militancy" (for lack of a better word) about analog vs. digital on this website.

I'll come right out and say I do both forms (or will be doing both forms when I get my dark room up) and have no problem with either.

I just don't want to get into trouble like when I went to a Mosin-Nagant forum for "preservationists" and made the mistake about posting how I got my M-44s stock looking awesome by sanding it and refinishing it in oil. I was summarily and unceremoniously booted out of the forum with some choice words to go with it. Of course it didn't help that I pointed out the hypocricy of a "preservationist" group going out and firing, cleaning and generally not "preserving in the condition obtained" firearm.

Anyway, don't want to start anything here by any means because it looks like an awesome resource for my future B/W plans. Just need to know if I need to keep a lid on the fact that I like digital too (for different reasons).

I shoot 35mm film (for now) for B&W and digital for color. I intend to go to a larger format for B&W later on. I'm open about this and I say so when appropriate. I just don't discuss digital side of my hobby here as it is not the focus of this forum. Typically, thread with too much digital content or when discussion turn digital, moderator often locks the thread with a short comment. Discussion of digital vs. analog is forbidden by rule on this forum.

Yeah, that about sums it up. It depends on the day sometimes. Many use. But it's don't ask, don't tell.

Those are awesome! I have a very very stock M44 still with cosmoline oozing out of the pores of the stock, a glossy 91/30, and my personal favorite the M38 which is kind of like how you described your "preservation" That is the funnest rifle in the whole wide world to shoot. Love the 4 to 5 foot fireball

Well, welcome to APUG. The discussions about digital are truly off topic around here (and borderline taboo to many people) but I think over time you will really appreciate that bit. It makes APUG the premier source of information and dialog about all things film. On that you can depend!

I SOOOOooo want to get an m-38.....

But back on topic. I have no intention of speaking of digital, but I don't want to be a pariah for actually using it some times (lots of times).

My goal here is to become a better B/W photographer and get back to my roots of photography like I was doing in high school.

Now I even have a bunch of chemistry/biochemistry training in my life to understand the process even more (and probably analyze the fun out of the reactions).

Think of it this way, there are many (many, many, many) places on the web where you can discuss digital photography all you wish. If that is what you want and need, those are the best places for such discussions. I see APUG as a haven from all that. Some here are a little more "militant" in that regard, but I think it simply has become part of the etiquette. Sean and the mods have worked very hard to create and foster this amazing resource for analog photographers. It is out of respect for that effort that I avoid digital topics here.

Welcome to the party. (and if you have a chemistry background, there are some really interesting discussions you will enjoy)

Cheers,

Yeah, I have no intention of discussing digi. There are many places for that as you point out.

I fear, though, that I might slip if someone goes postal on digi here and I feel like a response coming.

Whatever. I just want to better my B/W photography and you guys/gals seem like the right people to talk to about it.

As others have said, the conversation here revolves around analog and traditional photographic methods. There's a great sister site, HybridPhoto for those combining digital and analog technologies. There are plenty of people here who shoot with digital cameras as well as film, and I would say the vast majority here don't have any problems or consider anyone a "pariah" for doing so. We'd like to keep APUG on topic, and to that end, we'll close threads that ask about digital methods, and the digi vs. analog debate has been hashed over more than enough, and those threads sent to the soap box, which is subscriber only.

Carry on with your picture making however you like, and if you have any questions regarding the analog side of your work, ask away or use the search function.

You did what?? Now your in deep trouble dude!!! Just kidding.

The reason that some are to skimpy on the re-sanding thing is because when done it loses a fair amount of his value on the market, but if you aren't selling it and use it for regular shooting it's OK to do it. I find the reaction of booting someone because he prefers this method a little over the top.

I have A Mosin Nagant myself, model 91/30 (round receiver) made by Izhevsk in 1943 and refurbished by a Ukraine Depot in the 1970's. I shot it a few times but being a nice original number matching specimen I will soon get one that is more for shooting then for display.

Concerning digital, the forum here is pretty strict on making topics but many here use both analogue and digital. I shoot analogue but I scan all my negatives as a form of contact printing, it's faster and cheaper to do so, so no shame if you are using both worlds.

SuzanneR has already touched the topic and I (still some form of newb here) would like to reenforce this: People here get somewhat touchy here if you discuss scanning techniques and digital post processing, even if good old film was the image source and even if such procedures might save or at least improve the result.

The reason I specifically point this out is I didn't think you joined the forum to discuss Bayer patterns, but the scanning topic is something where I fortunately watched someone else receiving harsh flames here before I was able to commit a similar sin myself.

Welcome to APUG-- this is now your second home, and we dont care if you did refinish the stock an your blunderbus--most of us here refinish and "improve" most of the old shooters we get our hands on. When its time for your darkroom, ask as many questions as you need, and there'll be numerous answeres for each one you ask. if you need equiptment, ask here first--chances are someone will have what you need or know where you can get it.
MERRY CHRISTMAS

It's sometimes hard not to mention the other method of capture. I use it pretty much 100% for my business.

However I'm starting to get back into film more & more as I start thinking about doing less gigs in the near future and spending more time with film cameras.

I've got two I'm exercising now, both Rolleiflex cameras one is a 3,5 Tessar the other a f 2,8 Zeiss Planar. I bought both used but they look like they are brand new, no paint off the circular rim by the advance lever. I have an assortment of films, 99% black & white and I'm having a blast.

With film things slow down and I Am beginning to enjoy the darkroom again.

I've got a nice 16x20 black & white print of a couple I made when I was 100% film based and I have it framed to show prospects and most like the "color" of the print.

At any rate, I still enjoy film capture and this is a wonderful site and I'm always learning. And I want to help too!

Most of us own at least an entry level P&S digi cam. I use mine for quick shots I need to get on line, such as shots for "the Bay". Is it my primary shooter? No. Will I forsake film? No. But the general handiness of digi, can be a good thing. I have a good friend who shoots all digital, and does some amazing work. I still talk to him, and his wife, and I'll even been seen in public with him. Shoot what you want, the whole film vs. digital argument is pointless, and reminds me of Fox news.

You care way too much what other people think! Just relax ;-)

This is not to suggest you should spew about digital with impunity here on this site. Rather, do what most of us digital-too shooters do: Keep it film and wet, and in passing some of us might admit to shooting digital for whatever reason, but the prime directive as I see it for this site is to discuss film and wet and all things pertaining to such; like analog equipment, technique, where to get this chemical or that film, etc.

Just remember: Film and Wet.

...and dump this hyper politically-correct hyper sensitivity crud! ;-) Because if you do "goof" and say something too "digital", you won't offend me, and perhaps you'll not offend most of us, but I can't speak for anyone else, so this is conjecture on my part....welcome and have fun!!!

Yes, I'm militant in a verbally assertive way about photography. I'm not interested in digital image production, either doing it or even looking at it. And I find myself standing up for photography every time I see its good name co-opted to give dignity or value to some quick and dirty picture making process.

Crikey, I've even been known to offer a clenched fist salute to "photography". This with a smile on my face; the fist to show I am serious and the smile to show I am not dangerous.

Moisins are fine. I have quite a few. But none shoot as well as my Finn built on a Westinghouse hex receiver! Now figure out how that one happened.
Oh, yeah. I do dinosaur photography on film; and have a digithell slr, also.
