OK, maybe I am not exactly a newbie, but the question is

I print almost exclusively on FB paper - the exception is that I do contact sheets using RC. My wife teaches an intro photo class to teenagers out of our home darkroom. In her class she uses exclusively RC paper since they can dry it and take it home with them immediately.

I use a variety of toners in my work - most often Selenium, sometimes Sepia (from the Formulary), and occaisionally other stuff like the Berg blue or yellow toners. My wife thought that it would be fun to set up a session with a variety of different toners and let the kids play with the different effects that you can get through toning - she asked me about setting it up. Now comes the naive question: do toners work on RC papers? Do they behave differently from RC?

What do we need to worry about?

Toners work the same with RC papers, in fact one added benefit is that the solutions will last longer and have a greater capacity as no chemicals are being absorbed by the paper base.

Just make sure the kids observe reasonable hygenie / safety precautions, and they wash their hands well.

I am starting printing and I have little experience, but according to my tests, it depends on the paper.

Ilford multigrade rc deluxe : No tone in KRST nor in Viradon
Ifford MG RC Warmtone: Toned in both Viradon and KRST
Tetenal paper: Purple tone after 5 minutes in Viradon

I found the one time I toned MGIV-RC in sepia (non-smelly type) that the tone was much lighter than with MGIV-FB. As it was only the once, I can't say if that's a general result.

A single-bath blue toner (Fotospeed) worked fine in my latest postcard exchange print (MGIV-RC).

Good luck, Bob.

And it has to be said...

Lucky teenagers to have someone like your wife around. I wish I started this wonderful craft as a kid.

Well done to her.

I have recently finished toning Ilford MG IV RC Deluxe in Kodak's Rapid Selenium toner at a dilution of 1:10 for five minutes toning time. It definitely cooled down the image color quite nicely, and I was pleased with it.
