A little about myself:

High School EC Teacher by trade

Photographer at heart: Love wet-plate collodion (the real stuff) but also shoot digital. Looking for a new outlet, possibly pinhole...looking into other stuff as well.

Id like to do this stuff full time (photography) and am working on that goal as much as I can, while still keeping the pure joy of photography in the forefront of that dream.

Glad to be here.

Southeast in downtown Raleigh?
I have not been to that one but to Peace St. camera (Formerly Southeasrtern camera as well)
Peace camera stocks AGFA products, Diafine and other goodies if you are interested. [They have some APX100 in 120]
I think the Peace St guys have more analog stuff than the Southeastern camera guys,

Yeah, I agree about the analog vs digital with Peace vs Southeastern.

Southeastern has a new store (Atlantic Ave, I believe). Tony told that they had a little more of the film stuff there than they did in Cary. They said the film stuff sold better nearer to the schools (NSCU, Merideth, Peace) than the digital stuff that was sold in the "higher income area" of Cary.....makes sense I suppose.

See you around maybe.

Welcome from south Louisiana! Actually, I lived in Greensboro for almost three years ('98-'01). Used to frequent Carolina Camera...alot. Hubby and I actually exhibited with the Greensboro Artists League while we were there. Neat place. I was sorry to hear Carolina Camera closed. Nice man, Mr. Rausch. I've been curious if Dalmation Lab was still up and running.

Again, welcome aboard!

(Welcome) Newbie from NC

Also a newbie from NC; helping daughter with darkroom prints. Really enjoy the printing! We live in Charlotte, NC, and she recently transferred to a college out of town. The college is a great place, but if you aren't signed up for a photography class, there's no rental darkrooms that we can find. Will be setting her up a darkroom an hour closer where there is some free space.

Camera World is a great place; very helpful people! Sometimes have trouble with the rental darkrooms here, but that's what you get with rentals, I guess.

I grew up in Charlotte and for many years was a member of the Light Factory. I'm not that familar with their new darkroom, but I think they have moved back into Spirit Square after having moved out about ten years ago. I could be wrong about this, but it might be worth checking out their darkroom if you haven't already...used to be that they had a very nice rental darkroom in Spirit Square, with a second film darkroom and a finishing area as well as a gallery on the first floor. They had classes in color and b/w. Annual dues were low and the darkrooms were rented by the hour on an honor system when the classes weren't using them. They supplied the chemistry...CPCC used to have a halfway decent student darkroom as well. I used to work in a camera store there as well, Adger Smyth--not in business anymore. Some of the people who worked for him went off & started Charlotte Camera...

btw, welcome to NC...

Camera shops...IMPO

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

As for camera shops I deal with....

Southeastern is the best as far as Im concerned. Tony is topnotch and is a great guy to deal with. He has always been more than fair with trades, purchases, loans...you name it....he was great with it.

Most of the gear I own that was purchased used was bought from Tony, in fact most of my new gear was from him.

Peace (formerly Southeastern....Tony and his business partner split) has most of the old gear and staff for the most part...but most of the staff there are pretty hard to deal with. They are also pretty heavy on the "lets put Tony and SE Camera down when we can"...and thats not good business. They have some good stuff, but Ill keep driving past them to Tony when I can.

I've dealt with both Todd & Tony since they worked together at University Camera, even before they were on Guess Road. I guess that's almost close to 20 yrs ago...I've never had a problem with either of them, but like most people, they have their own ways. The split, on one hand came as a surprise, otoh, not so much of a surprise.

I think you can see it in the stock of the 2 stores (or one against 5 maybe?). Tony came from a pj background, and went on to a commercial lab and resulted in him buying a local (c-hill) lab and incorporating it into his store there. Todd is more of a collector, and was never really the business end of that original store. The differences were clear if you frequented the store enough, or knew any of the folks who work (or worked) there as I do. I think the split was good in many ways, because it let both parties go out and pursue their ways.

I find it ironic though, that SEC would return to Raleigh with so little darkroom stock, when Tony is a lab guy heart. Even moreso than many of the guys who work at Peace---only there's not market in that really now.

What I find with Peace is that, although many of the folks can be highly opinionated (but so am I, so this is no big deal), they know what they're talking about. They're more than enthusiasts or salesmen, they are shooters and printers. A lot of what you find stocked on the shelves is there, because someone on staff likes it and wants to shoot it, process with it etc. Those guys have worked in labs and studios in town as well as shot freelance and worked at local papers. Like most camera stores, they are haunted with regulars, and they have a gruff sort of "club" atmosphere at times, which may be a turnoff for some, but then again--I still shoot film and use paper and like being able to find it and talk to someone who gives a damn about it. They don't pad out purchases with crap you don't need, and if you're looking for some esoteric lab product, you can find someone who knows what you're talking about.

I went into the new SEC here in town, and asked the guy where all the paper was, or whether they had any pro dealerships with Kodak, Fuji etc--since I like to buy US, not gray--and he told me "nobody uses that stuff anymore". To which I replied, "I do--I do it for a living".

So it depends--we recently bought a couple of water panel rebuild kits from them since they deal with our purchasing system. It requires the vendor to kick back 1.7% of the sale...to tell you the truth, we deal with both stores very little for work--most of it is for personal--work, we deal with Camcor and other larger stores because the contracts are at prices below wholesale and the smaller stores will lose money. the bigger stores even lose money sometimes. before they split, I think they thought about pursuing the contract, but frankly there's no way either store(s) could handle the volume or the customer service required. Camcor and the others can, because that is about all they really do. They have the sales staff, the demo studios and equipment etc. But as a walk-in store, they're nothing compared to either SEC or Peace....

it's a tough business.

I like both owners--and have dealt with them for years, I'd like to see both prosper to be honest. I don't see them as being the same really. But then again, if someone on staff is having a bad day or is an a**hole, I don't let that get to me, since I'm surrounded with people like that everyday and have worked retail myself, and have had my share of customers that I wanted to throttle. That's just life. Customer's always right.

oh, btw--the stock continues to grow and has turned over continuously. they managed to ditchh the army surplus container stuffed with broken enlargers and other weird stuff (and gave away quite a bit of it). they have probably more film cameras and darkroom stuff than any of the SEC stores, unless you go back into the storage areas and get into the lab stuff like roller processors etc.)

btw--since I posted last night, I was reminded of when we had another camera store in town, Sam Bass. Sam Bass was in Cameron Village for many years, and had a consumer store and a Pro shop in the basement. They had different staff in both parts, and they catered to the wedding/portrait business in the pro shop mainly. They had a darkroom section as well as a rental section for many years as well, but over time, they scaled all of this down and became smaller--eventually they were bought by Ritz and then became Wolf and are no more really....

SEC bought what was left of the darkroom stock--and some of this is still around. I saw a box of Kodabrome RC that had a Sam Bass tag on it in the new store (sec) in town. That has to be at least 8 yrs old now, probably sat on the shelf of Sam Bass for a few years at that as well....

Sam Bass had this attitude that the other stores weren't "professional". Some of the staff were snobs, and the store had a huge markup in price. Everything was expensive there. I hardly ever dealt with them, only when when I really couldn't find anything if I was in a bind, because they were so expensive. At work, we had an account there, but almost never used them. Maybe once every couple of years. Yet I knew pros who swore uphill & down about them, and would never use anyone else.

Raleigh Camera was a repair shop in Cameron Village as well, and they sold some used gear also. They had one of the only repair shops in the triangle area for years. They eventually closed and some of the guys set up shop in the back of SEC on Peace as employees. They're an odd lot really. Can be tough to deal with, and have always been that way. But they too, for the most part, know their stuff. Raleigh Camera always bent over backwards to help fix pro equipment. They were there, even if they were a PIA to deal with.

It's the same way with the labs in town. We don't have as many as we used to, but if you used a few enough, you can pick up on the gossip as well--which I won't get into here--but it happens in subtle ways, and while it probably is unprofessional--it has gone on for a long time. even with the labs.

SEC when Tony was there--they had a deal with a local lab that they wouldn't set up a lab in town, if this lab wouldn't sell film. they never had a lab, but it didn't work the other way around....and in the lab's defense, it's business. they had the customer support to sell the film, so I don't see a big deal here. I guess the problem is in the agreement being made, whatever that specifically was.

The new SEC in town--I am not privy to what happened when they formally split, but there are two sides to every story. The new store is very close to the old one, and I imagine there could be some rivalry there, but like the old store and the lab--it's business.

btw--I haven't heard any of this negative talk really, and spoke with a guy I work with today, and he hasn't heard any either. then again, I don't find the staff there to be hard to deal with either. I guess I'm a pretty loyal customer or something, but I think they're probably the best store in the area for traditional materials and gear.

ymmv
