New York Studio Hire

I'd like to find a studio that I can afford to hire in the New York area. The ones I can find via google are way outside my budget, but presumably like in London there must be clubs and collectives who have "cheap and cheerful" facilities they hire out. Can anyone suggest somewhere I can look?
