Was able to finally get back to Rochester last Saturday to see this show. The highlight was by far the inclusion of John Schott's 8x10 contact prints from his book/series "Route 66 Motels". Possibly the most beautiful prints I've ever seen, these alone are worth the admission price. I can only wonder if this is what Azo looks like, if so, I now understand all the love I've seen toward this paper over the years. Had never heard of Lewis Baltz, but the quality of his 35mm enlargements from his series "New Industrial Parks" was superior to most of the medium format work represented, which tended to be soft (especially after viewing Schott's and Nicholas Nixon's contact prints). Two 20x24 C-Prints from Stephen Shore's "Uncommon Places" (enlargements made in 2008, from 8x10 negatives) glowed, looked almost three-dimentional. Overall, a very satisfying show; minor nitpicking aside about the softness of several of the medium format enlargements, the overall quality of the printing was stunning. It runs at the Eastman House until 9/27.
The comments in the gallery book were hilarious: "BORING"; "No one is writing anything because it is just so horrible"; and my favorite: "I understand why this exhibition is important, but what I don't understand is why I feel so depressed after seeing it".. hahaha..
Following two walkthroughs I made my way to the bookstore perfectly ready to part with $60.00 or whatever the price of the catalog was going to be. Too bad, the catalog won't be out until December, when the show is in L.A.
Not much in the way of details on the GEH page (and obviously I'm no art critic), but here's the link:
